Overview
Erie sits on the shore of Lake Erie in north-western Pennsylvania, roughly midway between Cleveland and Buffalo. It is an easy-going lakeside city best known for Presque Isle, a curving sandy peninsula of beaches and nature trails, and for its part in the War of 1812. For UK travellers it works well as a relaxed break in its own right or as a base for the Great Lakes and Niagara Falls, around a two-hour drive away. This guide covers how to reach Erie from the UK, when to go and how to keep the fare sensible — the live fare data and the When to book chart above show current prices.
Best time to fly to Erie
Late spring to early autumn (May to September) is the most comfortable window, with warm days, open Lake Erie beaches and Presque Isle at its best. July and August are the warmest and busiest. Autumn brings crisp air and fine foliage across the countryside. Winters are cold and famously snowy thanks to lake-effect snow, so December to March suits snow enthusiasts more than first-time visitors. For lower fares, look at the shoulder weeks in May, early June or late September and check the price charts on this page.
Airlines and routes
There are no direct flights from the UK to Erie. Erie International is a small regional airport served mainly by American Airlines and United Express, connecting through US hubs such as Charlotte, Chicago O'Hare and Washington Dulles. A typical routing is London Heathrow to Charlotte or Chicago (around 8 to 9 hours) with British Airways, American or United, then a short connecting flight of about 90 minutes on to Erie. Allow a total journey time of roughly 13 to 16 hours including the layover. Booking the whole trip on one ticket protects your connection if the first flight runs late.
Things to do in Erie
Erie packs a lot of lakeside leisure into a compact area. Highlights include:
- Presque Isle State Park: a sandy peninsula on Lake Erie with swimming beaches, cycling and walking trails and excellent birdwatching.
- Erie Maritime Museum and US Brig Niagara: the reconstructed flagship from the 1813 Battle of Lake Erie, with hands-on naval history.
- Tom Ridge Environmental Center: free exhibits on the peninsula's ecology plus an observation tower with wide lake views.
- Waldameer Park and Water World: a much-loved traditional amusement and water park near the park entrance.
- Erie Art Museum: a lively downtown gallery with a strong permanent collection and regular events.
At Erie International Airport (ERI)
Erie International Airport (Tom Ridge Field) lies about 5 miles south-west of downtown Erie, a 10 to 15 minute drive. There is no rail link. Car hire is the most flexible choice, with desks in the terminal; taxis and ride-hailing apps also serve the airport and the fare into the centre is modest. Some hotels run shuttles, so ask when you book. Local EMTA buses cover the wider city if you are travelling light.
Top tips for finding cheap flights to Erie
- Book ahead: for transatlantic travel, roughly two to five months before departure tends to bring the best value — see the When to book chart above.
- Fly midweek and off-peak: Tuesday and Wednesday departures, and travel outside July, August and the Christmas period, are usually cheaper.
- Stay flexible with dates: shifting your trip by a few days, or using a different UK departure airport, can cut the fare noticeably.
- Compare hubs and airlines: connections via Charlotte, Chicago, Newark or Washington vary a lot in price, so check a few combinations.
Travel essentials
UK passport holders travelling for tourism do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days, but you must apply online for an ESTA under the Visa Waiver Programme before you travel; it is valid for two years. Your passport should be valid for the length of your stay. The currency is the US dollar; cards are accepted almost everywhere, so budget in pounds and carry only a little cash. No special vaccinations are required, but US medical care is expensive, so comprehensive travel insurance is essential.
