Overview
Belize City is the country's largest town and its main gateway, set where the Caribbean meets Haulover Creek. Most UK visitors pass through en route to the barrier reef, the cayes or the Maya sites inland, but the compact colonial centre is worth a half-day. International flights land at Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport (BZE), just north of town, and English is the official language, so getting around is straightforward.
Best time to fly to Belize City
The dry season, from late November to April, is the most reliable time to visit: sunnier, warmer and less humid. It is also peak season, so flights cost most around Christmas, February half-term and Easter. June to November is wetter and overlaps the Atlantic hurricane season, which peaks from August to October. May and early June often balance fair weather with better value — see the When to book chart above for how fares shift through the year.
Airlines and routes
There are no non-stop flights between the UK and Belize, so every trip needs at least one connection. Common routings are American Airlines via Miami or Dallas, United via Houston or Newark, or Delta via Atlanta, with British Airways and Virgin Atlantic serving those US hubs from London; some itineraries connect through Canc'un instead. From London allow roughly 13–16 hours in total, and from Manchester nearer 15–18 hours, usually via a US gateway or London. Connecting through the United States requires an approved ESTA, even in transit.
Things to do in Belize City
The centre is walkable, and the city is a handy base for trips north and out to the reef.
- Museum of Belize: a former colonial prison displaying Maya jade, ceramics and the nation's history.
- Swing Bridge: the hand-cranked bridge over Haulover Creek, still turned by hand to let boats pass.
- St John's Cathedral: the oldest Anglican cathedral in Central America, built in the early 1800s from ships' ballast brick.
- Altun Ha: a compact Maya temple site about an hour north, an easy half-day excursion.
- Water taxis to the cayes: fast boats from the marine terminal to Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye for snorkelling on the reef.
At Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport (BZE)
The airport is at Ladyville, about 16 km (10 miles) north-west of the centre and a 20–30 minute drive. Licensed taxis outside arrivals charge a set fare into town, many hotels and lodges arrange transfers, and the main car hire firms have desks in the terminal. For the cayes and southern resorts, Tropic Air and Maya Island Air fly onward from BZE or from the municipal airstrip near the centre.
Top tips for finding cheap flights to Belize City
- Book roughly two to five months ahead; peak-season fares climb sharply close to departure.
- Fly midweek and avoid UK school holidays — Tuesday and Wednesday departures usually beat weekend prices.
- Search flexible dates to compare a whole month at once, and check the price charts on this page before booking.
- Compare connecting hubs: routing via Miami, Houston or Canc'un can vary noticeably in price for the same travel dates.
Travel essentials
UK passport holders do not need a visa for tourist stays of up to 30 days, though you may be asked for a return or onward ticket and proof of funds. The currency is the Belize dollar (BZD), fixed to the US dollar at 2:1, and US dollars are widely accepted. No vaccinations are required for most travellers arriving from the UK, but a yellow fever certificate is needed if you arrive from a country where the disease is present. Check current FCDO and TravelHealthPro advice before you travel, and note that most international departures carry an exit fee, usually included in your ticket.
