Nicaragua is Central America's largest country and one of its best-value destinations, pairing Spanish-colonial cities with active volcanoes, vast lakes and two contrasting coastlines. It sees far fewer visitors than neighbouring Costa Rica, so costs on the ground stay low. There are no direct flights from the UK to Nicaragua, but a single connection in Europe, the US or Panama gets you there comfortably.
The dry season (December to April) is the most popular time to visit, with dependable sunshine on the Pacific side and easy travel between regions. The green season (May to November) brings afternoon rain, lush scenery and lower fares, though September and October are the wettest months and the Caribbean coast can be affected by tropical storms into November. Christmas and Easter (Semana Santa) push demand and prices up, so check the When to book chart above before fixing your dates.
Nearly all international flights land at Augusto C. Sandino International Airport (MGA) in the capital, Managua. It is compact and roughly 20 to 30 minutes from the city centre; many travellers head straight on to colonial Granada (about 45 minutes) or León (around 90 minutes). Domestic carrier La Costeña links Managua with the Corn Islands and other remote areas.
From the UK every itinerary connects at least once. Iberia routes via Madrid, avoiding the US altogether; American Airlines connects through Miami, United through Houston, Copa Airlines through Panama City, and Avianca via Bogotá or San Salvador, usually paired with a partner flight from London or Manchester. From London, allow roughly 16 to 20 hours in total including the layover; from Manchester you will normally travel via Madrid, Amsterdam or a US hub for a similar journey. Connecting in the United States requires an approved ESTA.
UK passport holders do not need a visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days, but you will need a passport valid for at least six months and an onward or return ticket; a small tourist entry fee is payable in US dollars on arrival. The currency is the Nicaraguan córdoba, though US dollars are widely accepted for larger purchases. For the best price, watch the When to book chart above and reserve early for Christmas and Easter.
Your allowance to Nicaragua depends on the airline and the fare you book. The table below shows typical long-haul allowances so you know roughly what to expect — always confirm the exact limits with your airline before you fly.
| Fare type | Hand baggage | Checked baggage |
|---|---|---|
| Basic / Light economy | 1 small under-seat bag | Usually none — add for a fee |
| Standard economy | 1 cabin bag + 1 personal item | Typically 1 × 23 kg |
| Premium economy | 1–2 cabin bags + personal item | Typically 2 × 23 kg |
| Business / First | 2 cabin bags + personal item | Typically 2 × 32 kg |
