Overview
This is Glasgow in Montana's remote north-east, a friendly prairie town on the Milk River rather than the Scottish city of the same name. Often described as one of the most isolated communities in the lower 48 states, it is the gateway to the enormous Fort Peck Reservoir, wide big-sky landscapes and some of the richest dinosaur country in North America. For UK travellers it is a genuine off-the-beaten-track trip, and it works best as part of a wider Montana road journey. The airport carries the code GGW and, a little confusingly, the name Glasgow International Airport, though flights today are regional only.
Best time to fly to Glasgow
Late June to early September is the sweet spot: warm days often into the high 20s Celsius, long light evenings and full access to the lake for fishing and boating. May, September and early October are quieter and generally cheaper, with pleasant days and cool nights. Winters are long and severely cold, with temperatures regularly well below freezing and occasional deep Arctic snaps, so plan carefully if you travel then. See the When to book chart above for how fares move through the year.
Airlines and routes
There are no direct flights from the UK to Glasgow, Montana. The usual routing is a transatlantic flight from London to a US hub such as Denver, Minneapolis-St Paul or Chicago with British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, United, Delta or American, then a domestic flight to Billings (BIL). From Billings a small regional carrier, currently Cape Air, operates the Essential Air Service route into Wokal Field (GGW), taking around 1 hour 15 minutes and sometimes with a brief stop en route. Expect a full travelling day of roughly 16 to 20 hours door to door. Many visitors instead fly to Billings and drive the scenic 4.5 to 5 hours north, or take Amtrak's Empire Builder, which stops right in Glasgow.

At Wokal Field - Glasgow International Airport (GGW)
The airport sits about 2 miles (3 km) north-east of town, roughly a five-minute drive from the centre. It is a single small terminal with no rail link or scheduled buses, so arrange a hire car in advance or ask your hotel about a shuttle or local taxi. Glasgow itself is walkable, but a car is essential for exploring Fort Peck and the wider region.
Top tips for finding cheap flights to Glasgow
- Book the transatlantic leg roughly two to five months ahead; the price charts on this page show the best window for your dates.
- Fly midweek, typically Tuesday or Wednesday, and avoid the July and August peak to trim both airfare and car-hire costs.
- Price the trip as London to Billings plus a separate Cape Air or car-hire segment, which is often cheaper than a single through-fare.
- Compare hub routings such as Denver, Minneapolis and Chicago, and keep your dates flexible by a day or two either side.
Travel essentials
UK citizens travelling for tourism need an approved ESTA under the US Visa Waiver Programme, applied for online well before departure, plus a passport valid for the trip. Stays of up to 90 days are permitted. The currency is the US dollar; set your budget in pounds and carry a fee-free card, as cash is still handy in this rural area. No special vaccinations are required for entry. Mountain Time is seven hours behind the UK, and mobile coverage can be patchy once you leave town, so download maps for offline use.
