Dominica — the Commonwealth of Dominica, not to be confused with the Dominican Republic — is the Caribbean's Nature Island: a mountainous volcanic island of rainforest, rivers and hot springs sitting between Guadeloupe and Martinique. There are no direct flights from the UK, so every trip pairs a transatlantic flight to a regional hub with a short island-hop onwards. It is a rewarding journey for walkers, divers and anyone after a quieter, greener side of the Caribbean.
The dry season from December to April brings the most reliable sunshine and the best hiking conditions, and is also the busiest and priciest period. June to November is the Atlantic hurricane season, with the heaviest rain from August to October. For a balance of decent weather and lower fares, look at May and late November. Temperatures stay warm all year, generally 25–31°C, and Dominica is always greener, and wetter, than its neighbours. Check the When to book chart above to see how fares move through the year.
Douglas–Charles Airport (DOM), on the north-east coast, is Dominica's main airport and handles all regional services; it is roughly a 45–75 minute drive over the mountains to the capital, Roseau. The smaller Canefield Airport (DCF) sits just north of Roseau but takes only light aircraft. Your UK routing will usually connect through Antigua (ANU), Barbados (BGI) or occasionally St Lucia or Sint Maarten.
From the UK, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic fly non-stop from London to Antigua and Barbados in around 8.5–9 hours; TUI and Virgin also serve Barbados from Manchester in a similar time. From those hubs, interCaribbean Airways and Winair operate the 40–60 minute hop to Douglas–Charles. Alternatively you can route via the USA, for example Miami or San Juan with American Airlines, though this requires a US ESTA. Regional connections are not always same-day, so an overnight in the hub is sometimes needed.
UK passport holders do not need a visa for tourist visits to Dominica and are normally granted stays of up to six months; carry a passport valid for the length of your stay and proof of onward travel. If you connect through the USA you will need an approved ESTA, even to transit. The currency is the East Caribbean dollar (EC$), pegged to the US dollar, which is also widely accepted; cards work in hotels and larger businesses, but carry cash for rural areas. For the best value, book a few months ahead for winter travel and check the When to book chart above before you confirm.
Your allowance to Dominica depends on the airline and the fare you book. The table below shows typical long-haul allowances so you know roughly what to expect — always confirm the exact limits with your airline before you fly.
| Fare type | Hand baggage | Checked baggage |
|---|---|---|
| Basic / Light economy | 1 small under-seat bag | Usually none — add for a fee |
| Standard economy | 1 cabin bag + 1 personal item | Typically 1 × 23 kg |
| Premium economy | 1–2 cabin bags + personal item | Typically 2 × 23 kg |
| Business / First | 2 cabin bags + personal item | Typically 2 × 32 kg |
Indicative only. Allowances vary by airline, route and fare — always check your airline's baggage policy.
