Overview
Perched on the western tip of Lake Superior, Duluth is Minnesota's gateway to the Great Lakes and the wild North Shore. It is a working port city with a walkable waterfront, a lively craft-beer and arts scene, and some of the finest inland-sea scenery in the United States. There are no direct flights to Duluth from the UK, but the trip is straightforward with a single change at a major US hub.
Best time to fly to Duluth
Summer, from June to early September, is the busiest season: daytime temperatures sit around 20–25°C and the Lakewalk comes alive, with Grandma's Marathon filling the city in June. Late September and early October bring vivid autumn colour along the shore and softer fares. Winters are long and genuinely cold, often well below freezing with heavy snow, which suits skiers more than sightseers. For the best balance of weather and price, aim for late May or September and check the When to book chart above.
Airlines and routes
Duluth International Airport (DLH) is served by regional flights from Delta, via Minneapolis–St Paul, and United, via Chicago O'Hare. From the UK the usual pattern is a transatlantic flight to one of those hubs followed by a short connecting hop, with Minneapolis to Duluth taking under an hour. Delta flies direct from London Heathrow to Minneapolis in about 8.5 hours; you can also connect through Chicago, Detroit or Atlanta with Delta, United, American or Virgin Atlantic. Allow roughly 13–16 hours in total. Many travellers instead fly into Minneapolis and drive the scenic 150 miles north.

At Duluth International Airport (DLH)
DLH is a small, easily navigated airport about 5 miles (8 km) north-west of downtown. There is no rail link; a taxi or rideshare into the centre takes around 15 minutes, some hotels run shuttles, and the Duluth Transit Authority operates a local bus. Hiring a car at the airport is the most practical choice if you plan to explore the North Shore, Gooseberry Falls or the wider Arrowhead region.

Travel essentials
UK travellers need an approved ESTA under the US Visa Waiver Programme for stays of up to 90 days; apply online well before departure and check your passport is valid for the whole trip. The currency is the US dollar, so review the rate against the pound before you travel. No special vaccinations are required, but US medical care is costly, making comprehensive travel insurance essential. Winter visitors should pack for serious cold.
