Overview
Fargo sits on the eastern edge of North Dakota, on the Red River border with Minnesota, and it is a friendlier, more cultured stop than many travellers expect. The revived Broadway district downtown is full of independent shops, breweries and restaurants, while the surrounding prairie delivers those enormous American skies. It is also a natural gateway for road trips across the northern Great Plains. There are no direct flights to Fargo from the UK, so every route changes at a US hub, but the connections are straightforward and the city is easy to reach.
Best time to fly to Fargo
Summer, from June to early September, is the most comfortable time to visit, with warm days often in the mid-20s Celsius and long light evenings for exploring downtown or catching a Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks baseball game. Autumn brings crisp air and golden colour along the river. Winters are genuinely cold, frequently well below freezing with heavy snow, so pack seriously if you travel between December and February. Spring can be wet as the snow melts. UK school holidays and the run-up to Christmas push fares up, so check the When to book chart above to see how prices move through the year.
Airlines and routes
You will fly from the UK to a US connecting hub and then on to Fargo's Hector International Airport (FAR) on a regional aircraft. Delta is the most common choice, routing through Minneapolis-St Paul, Detroit or Atlanta, with the Minneapolis to Fargo leg taking barely an hour. American connects via Chicago O'Hare or Dallas/Fort Worth, while United uses Chicago, Denver or Newark. From London, expect around 8 to 9 hours to a Midwest or East Coast hub, then a short domestic hop; with the connection, allow roughly 13 to 17 hours in total depending on your layover. Booking the whole journey on one ticket keeps your baggage checked through and protects you if a flight runs late.
Things to do in Fargo
Fargo packs a lot of character into a walkable centre, with a couple of worthwhile detours into West Fargo.
- Fargo Theatre: a beautifully restored 1926 art deco cinema on Broadway, still showing films and live shows beneath its neon marquee.
- Plains Art Museum: North Dakota's largest art museum, set in a converted warehouse with regional, contemporary and Native American work.
- Bonanzaville: an open-air pioneer village in West Fargo with historic buildings, vintage vehicles and prairie heritage exhibits.
- Red River Zoo: a compact, family-friendly zoo specialising in cold-climate species such as red pandas and Sichuan takin.
- Roger Maris Museum: a free tribute to the Fargo-born baseball star, tucked inside the West Acres shopping centre.
At Hector International Airport (FAR)
Hector International is a small, easily navigated airport around 3 miles (5 km) north-west of downtown Fargo. There is no rail link, but a taxi or rideshare into the centre takes about 10 minutes. All the major car hire firms have desks in the terminal, which is the practical option if you plan to explore the wider region, and the local MATBUS network serves the airport on a limited schedule. Several downtown hotels run a courtesy shuttle, so it is worth asking when you book.
Top tips for finding cheap flights to Fargo
- Book ahead: for a transatlantic journey with a connection, roughly two to five months in advance tends to land the best fares; see the price charts on this page for current trends.
- Fly midweek: Tuesday and Wednesday departures are usually cheaper than weekends, and shoulder seasons in late spring and early autumn beat peak summer.
- Stay flexible: compare different hub routings and a day either side of your ideal date, as the connecting leg can swing the total price.
- Compare carriers: check Delta, American and United together rather than assuming one is cheapest, and weigh layover length against the fare.
Travel essentials
British passport holders travelling for tourism do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days, but you must hold an approved ESTA under the Visa Waiver Programme before you fly and carry a passport valid for the length of your trip. The currency is the US dollar; cards are accepted almost everywhere and tipping of around 15 to 20 per cent is expected in restaurants. There are no required vaccinations, but US healthcare is expensive and the GHIC is not valid, so comprehensive travel insurance with strong medical cover is essential. A UK driving licence is accepted for hiring a car.
