Overview
Durango is one of northern Mexico's most underrated colonial cities — a graceful centre of pink-stone churches and shaded plazas, framed by the dramatic Sierra Madre Occidental. Known across Mexico as the "Land of Cinema" for the many Westerns filmed here, it rewards travellers with big landscapes, revolutionary history and an unhurried pace. There are no direct flights from the UK, but well-timed connections make it very reachable, and the price charts on this page show how current fares are moving.
Best time to fly to Durango
Durango sits at around 1,880m, so its climate is milder and drier than the coast. The most comfortable months are March to May and October to November, with warm days, cool evenings and little rain. June to September brings warm afternoons and short, heavy downpours, while winter days are pleasant but nights can fall close to freezing. Fares from the UK usually rise around Easter, the summer holidays and Christmas — check the When to book chart above for the cheaper windows.
Airlines and routes
No airline flies directly from the UK to Durango. The usual route is British Airways from London Heathrow to Mexico City (roughly 11 to 12 hours), then a domestic connection with Aeroméxico, Viva Aerobus or Volaris to Durango (about 1 hour 30 minutes). Iberia via Madrid, or Air France and KLM via Paris and Amsterdam, also connect through Mexico City. Routings via Dallas with American Airlines work too, but need a US transit permit (ESTA). Allow 16 to 20 hours in total, depending on your layover.

At Guadalupe Victoria International Airport (DGO)
Durango's airport lies about 15km northeast of the centre, a 20 to 30 minute drive. There is no train or scheduled airport bus, so the practical choices are an authorised airport taxi, using a fixed-price ticket bought from the arrivals desk, or a pre-booked private transfer. Car hire is available at the terminal if you plan to explore the Sierra independently.
Top tips for finding cheap flights to Durango
- Book early: For connections through Mexico City, around three to six months ahead usually gives the best value.
- Fly midweek: Tuesday and Wednesday departures are typically cheaper than weekends, and off-peak beats Easter and summer.
- Stay flexible: Shifting your dates by a day or two can cut the fare — compare options on the price charts on this page.
- Split the journey: Sometimes booking the UK–Mexico City leg and the domestic hop separately works out cheaper than a single through fare.
Travel essentials
UK passport holders do not need a visa for tourism in Mexico and can usually stay up to 180 days; keep your entry stamp safe and carry a passport valid for the whole trip. The currency is the Mexican peso — exchange pounds on arrival or use ATMs, and keep some cash for smaller towns. No vaccinations are required, but drink bottled water and check the latest FCDO advice before you travel. If you transit the United States, you will need an approved ESTA.
