Overview
Campeche is one of Mexico's most overlooked gems: a UNESCO-listed walled city on the Gulf coast of the Yucatán Peninsula, where pastel colonial streets sit behind 17th-century pirate walls. Calmer and cheaper than Cancún, it's a rewarding base for exploring the Maya world. No airline flies here direct from the UK, but connecting routings are straightforward and well worth the effort.
Best time to fly to Campeche
The dry season from November to April brings warm days, lower humidity and the best conditions for exploring the old town — it's also peak season, so fares climb over Christmas, February half-term and Easter. May to October is hotter and wetter, with the Atlantic hurricane season running June to November; direct strikes on Campeche are rare, but storms can disrupt connecting flights. Late November and early December offer the best balance of weather and value; see the When to book chart above.
Airlines and routes
Your first leg is a long-haul flight to a Mexican hub. British Airways and Aeroméxico fly direct from London Heathrow to Mexico City in around 11–12 hours; Virgin Atlantic and others reach Cancún in about 10 hours. From Mexico City, Aeroméxico and VivaAerobus run short domestic hops to Campeche (CPE) in roughly 1 hour 40 minutes. Alternatively, fly into Mérida and drive the final two and a half hours. Allow 16–20 hours door to door, depending on your connection.
Things to do in Campeche
The walled centre is compact and made for strolling, with forts, museums and a breezy seafront all close by.
- Centro Histórico: the UNESCO old town of candy-coloured houses, a twin-towered cathedral and restored city gates.
- Fuerte de San Miguel: a hilltop Spanish fort with a fine Maya museum, including jade masks from Calakmul.
- Puerta de Tierra: the old land gate and ramparts, with an evening light-and-sound show on the city's pirate past.
- Edzná: an atmospheric Maya archaeological site about an hour inland, topped by the Building of the Five Storeys.
- The Malecón: a breezy seafront promenade and the best spot for Gulf of Mexico sunsets.
At Ing. Alberto Acuña Ongay International Airport (CPE)
Campeche's airport lies about 10 km south-east of the centre, a 15–20 minute drive. There are no trains or public buses to the terminal, so most visitors take an authorised taxi — buy a fixed-price ticket from the official desk in arrivals and confirm the zone before setting off. Some hotels arrange transfers on request, and ride-hailing coverage is limited. Trips into the historic centre are short and inexpensive in pounds terms.
Top tips for finding cheap flights to Campeche
- Book long-haul early: for travel between December and April, booking three to six months ahead usually secures the best fares.
- Fly midweek and off-peak: Tuesday and Wednesday departures, and quieter months such as September, tend to be cheaper on both legs.
- Compare hubs: weigh connecting via Mexico City against flying to Cancún or Mérida and continuing by road — the price charts on this page show the difference.
- Stay flexible with dates: shifting your trip by a few days around school holidays can noticeably lower the long-haul fare.
Travel essentials
UK passport holders don't need a visa to visit Mexico as tourists and can usually stay up to 180 days, though you may be asked for proof of onward travel, funds and accommodation. Check your passport is valid for the length of your stay. The currency is the Mexican peso — cards are widely accepted and ATMs are common, but carry some cash for taxis and markets. No vaccinations are required; check current FCDO and TravelHealthPro advice before you travel and pack mosquito repellent.
