Overview
Guaymas sits on the Gulf of California in Sonora, north-west Mexico – a working port wrapped around calm bays and desert mountains. With its resort neighbour San Carlos, it draws UK travellers for warm winters, clear Sea of Cortez water and superb fishing and diving. There are no direct flights to Guaymas from the UK, but connections through Mexico City or a US hub are straightforward. Use the price charts on this page to compare live fares.
Best time to fly to Guaymas
The most comfortable months run from October to April, when days are warm and dry and evenings cool – this is peak season for North American snowbirds, so book early. May and June are hot but quieter. July to September brings intense heat, humidity and a slight risk of tropical storms, though fares can dip. Check the When to book chart above before you commit.
Airlines and routes
No airline flies direct from the UK to Guaymas. The simplest route is Aeroméxico from London Heathrow to Mexico City (about 11.5 hours), then an Aeroméxico Connect domestic flight on to Guaymas (roughly 2.5 hours). Alternatively, fly American, United or Delta via a US hub such as Dallas, Houston or Phoenix to Hermosillo (HMO), then drive around 90 minutes south. Allow 18–24 hours in total, including the layover.
Things to do in Guaymas
Most visitors split their time between the historic port and the bays of San Carlos.
- San Carlos beaches: Golden sand at Playa Los Algodones, framed by the twin-peaked Tetakawi mountain.
- Sea of Cortez boat trips: Snorkelling, diving and sea-lion colonies around San Pedro Nolasco Island.
- Cañón del Nacapule: A desert oasis canyon of native palms and rock pools near San Carlos.
- Guaymas malecón and old town: Waterfront promenade, seafood and the Plaza de los Tres Presidentes.
- Sport fishing: Marlin, dorado and yellowtail charters leave from the marina.
At General José María Yáñez International Airport (GYM)
Guaymas's small airport lies about 5km north of the city centre, a 10-minute drive. Taxis meet arriving flights – agree the fare first, or pre-book a transfer; San Carlos is around 20 minutes away. Car hire is limited and best reserved in advance, which is worthwhile if you plan to explore the coast and canyons.

Travel essentials
UK passport holders don't need a visa to visit Mexico as tourists and can usually stay up to 180 days; you'll receive an entry stamp on arrival, so keep it safe. The currency is the Mexican peso (MXN) – carry some cash for taxis and markets, though cards are widely accepted in San Carlos. No vaccinations are required, but drink bottled water and take comprehensive travel insurance. If you connect through the USA, you'll need an approved ESTA and must clear US immigration.
