Overview
Niagara Falls, New York sits right on the US side of one of the world's most spectacular natural wonders, where the Niagara River plunges over the American and Bridal Veil Falls just a short walk from Canada's famous Horseshoe Falls. It's a brilliant add-on to a wider USA trip — easily combined with New York City, Boston or a Great Lakes road trip — and makes for an unforgettable few days of thundering waterfalls, gorge-side trails and classic American state park scenery.
Best time to fly to Niagara Falls
Late spring through early autumn (May to October) brings the mildest weather, longer daylight for viewing the illuminated falls, and the fullest range of boat tours and attractions. July and August are the busiest and warmest months, while September and October offer noticeably quieter crowds and beautiful autumn colour along the gorge. Winter (December to February) is bitterly cold, with the spray freezing into dramatic ice formations, but fares tend to be at their lowest — check the When to book chart above to see how prices shift across the year.
Airlines and routes
There are no scheduled direct flights from the UK to Niagara Falls. The typical routing for UK travellers is a nonstop transatlantic flight of around 8 hours with an airline such as British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, American Airlines, United or Delta into a major US gateway (commonly New York), followed by a short connecting flight of around an hour, or a scenic onward drive, to reach the Niagara region. Flying via Air Canada into Toronto Pearson and continuing overland across the border is another popular option. Total journey times, including the connection, generally run from around 10 to 13 hours — the price charts on this page will show you which routing and carrier combination offers the best value for your dates.
Things to do in Niagara Falls
Beyond the falls themselves, the American side has plenty to fill a short break:
- Niagara Falls State Park: America's oldest state park, with paths leading right to the water's edge and views of all three falls.
- Maid of the Mist boat tour: A classic, exhilarating ride to the base of the falls that has been running for well over a century.
- Cave of the Winds: Wooden walkways take you within touching distance of Bridal Veil Falls — expect to get soaked.
- Niagara Gorge trails: Scenic hiking routes along the river below the falls, popular with birdwatchers and photographers.
- Niagara Wine Trail: A cluster of vineyards a short drive away, great for an afternoon of tastings overlooking Lake Ontario.
At Niagara Falls International Airport (IAG)
IAG is a small regional airport a few miles from downtown Niagara Falls, NY, handling a limited number of domestic leisure routes rather than international services. Most UK travellers instead land at a larger gateway airport and continue by car or connecting flight; Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF), around 25 miles south, offers considerably more onward connections and is a common arrival point for this area. From either airport, taxis, rideshares and hire cars are readily available, and downtown Niagara Falls and the state park are within a 10–40 minute drive depending on where you land.
Top tips for finding cheap flights to Niagara Falls
- Book your transatlantic leg 3–5 months ahead for the best combination of price and choice, especially for summer travel.
- Flying midweek (Tuesday to Thursday) rather than at weekends typically works out cheaper.
- Keep your dates flexible where possible — shifting by even a few days either side can unlock better fares, as shown in the chart above.
- Compare fares into nearby gateway airports such as Buffalo or Toronto alongside New York, as the wider routing options often bring the overall cost down.
Travel essentials
UK passport holders travelling to the USA for tourism or business for up to 90 days can generally enter visa-free under the Visa Waiver Programme, but must apply for ESTA authorisation online in advance of travel. The currency is the US dollar (USD), and it's worth checking your passport has at least six months' validity remaining. If your trip also crosses into Canada to see Horseshoe Falls, UK travellers will need a Canadian eTA for air travel, or simply their passport for a short land crossing by car.
