Overview
Freeport, on Grand Bahama Island, is the Bahamas' second city and a relaxed alternative to busier Nassau. Duty-free shopping at Port Lucaya, powder-soft beaches and one of the world's largest underwater cave systems are all within easy reach. It suits UK travellers wanting Caribbean-style sunshine with no language barrier and a straightforward, if not especially short, journey.
Best time to fly to Freeport
The dry season from mid-November to April is the sweet spot: warm days of around 24–28°C, lower humidity and reliable sunshine, arriving just as the UK winter bites. Summer is hotter and more humid and falls within the Atlantic hurricane season (June to November, peaking in September and October). For thinner crowds and better value, look at May or early November, and check the When to book chart above for how fares move through the year.
Airlines and routes
There are currently no scheduled direct flights from the UK to Freeport. The most common routing is British Airways from London Heathrow to Nassau (around nine to ten hours), then a short 35–40 minute connecting flight to Freeport with Bahamasair. Alternatively, fly via a US gateway such as Miami or Fort Lauderdale and pick up an onward Bahamasair service — you will need an approved ESTA to transit the United States. Virgin Atlantic also serves Nassau seasonally. From Manchester and other regional airports you will normally connect in London or the US, making it close to a full day's travel door to door.
Things to do in Freeport
Freeport rewards visitors who like nature and water as much as the marinas and markets. Top picks:
- Lucayan National Park: Ancient underwater caves and the show-stopping Gold Rock Beach.
- Port Lucaya Marketplace: Open-air shopping, waterfront dining and live music at Count Basie Square.
- Garden of the Groves: A lush botanical garden with waterfalls, birdlife and quiet walking trails.
- UNEXSO: A long-established dive centre offering reef dives, snorkelling trips and dolphin encounters.
- Paradise Cove (Deadman's Reef): One of the island's best beaches for shore snorkelling.
At Grand Bahama International Airport (FPO)
The airport lies about 5km (3 miles) from central Freeport and roughly 10–15 minutes' drive from Port Lucaya and the Lucaya beach area. There is no public bus service, so taxis are the standard choice, with government-set fares usually quoted per trip for two passengers. Many hotels will arrange a transfer if you ask when booking, and car hire desks are available in the terminal.
Top tips for finding cheap flights to Freeport
- Book around two to four months ahead; last-minute long-haul fares rarely drop.
- Fly midweek and avoid UK school holidays and the Christmas peak — the price charts on this page show the cheaper windows.
- Stay flexible by a day or two either side; a Tuesday or Wednesday departure often beats the weekend.
- Compare the Heathrow–Nassau route against a US-gateway connection, as the best value shifts by season and airline.
Travel essentials
UK passport holders do not need a visa to visit the Bahamas for tourism and can usually stay for up to three months; your passport should be valid for the length of your trip. Arriving passengers complete an electronic immigration and customs form. The currency is the Bahamian dollar, fixed one-to-one with the US dollar, which is accepted everywhere, and cards are widely used. No special vaccinations are required for most travellers — pack sun cream and insect repellent, and arrange travel insurance with good medical cover.
