Overview
Bocas Del Toro is a laid-back Caribbean archipelago in north-west Panama, near the Costa Rican border, known for turquoise water, stilted wooden guesthouses, rainforest islands and an unhurried pace. There are no direct flights to Bocas Del Toro from the UK, so every trip means a long-haul connection to Panama plus a short hop or boat transfer to the islands, but the reward is one of the Caribbean's most relaxed corners.
Best time to fly to Bocas Del Toro
The Caribbean coast keeps its own rhythm and sees some rain year-round. The sunniest, calmest spells usually fall around February to March and again in September and October, which also brings clearer water for snorkelling. December to April and the July to August window are busiest, so flights and rooms are at a premium. For better value, look at May, June and November, and use the When to book chart above to time your booking.
Airlines and routes
From the UK you fly in two stages. First, a long-haul flight to Panama City: KLM via Amsterdam, Iberia and Air Europa via Madrid, Air France via Paris and Lufthansa via Frankfurt all link London and regional airports to Panama's Tocumen airport, typically 13 to 18 hours including the layover. Routings via the USA with American or United are possible but need a US ESTA. From Panama City, Air Panama flies on to Isla Colón in about an hour from the domestic Albrook terminal, a short taxi ride across the city from Tocumen. Bus and water taxi via Almirante is the slower budget alternative.
Things to do in Bocas Del Toro
The archipelago is made for slow days on the water. Highlights include:
- Starfish Beach (Playa Estrella): A shallow, sheltered bay on Isla Colón scattered with orange starfish.
- Red Frog Beach: A palm-fringed surf beach on Isla Bastimentos, named after its tiny frogs.
- Bastimentos National Marine Park: Protected reefs and the Zapatilla Cays, the region's best snorkelling and diving.
- Dolphin Bay: A calm lagoon where bottlenose dolphins are often spotted on boat tours.
- Bocas Town: The walkable, colourful hub for waterfront bars, cafés and island-hopping boats.
At Isla Colón International Airport (BOC)
The airport sits right on the edge of Bocas Town on Isla Colón. The centre and the main dock are about a kilometre away, a 10 to 15 minute walk or a couple of dollars by taxi. From the town dock, water taxis run to Bastimentos, Carenero and the outer islands, and most hotels will arrange a pick-up.
Top tips for finding cheap flights to Bocas Del Toro
- Book the long-haul leg roughly two to five months ahead; the domestic Air Panama flight can be added closer to departure.
- Fly midweek and avoid the Christmas, Easter and summer peaks, using the price charts on this page to spot cheaper dates.
- Keep your dates flexible: shifting a departure by a day or two, or connecting through a different European hub, often lowers the fare.
- Compare the whole journey rather than just the long-haul, as the best value combination of a European connection plus the Panama City to Bocas hop can beat a single through-fare.
Travel essentials
UK passport holders do not need a visa for tourist stays in Panama of up to 180 days; carry a passport valid for at least three months and proof of onward travel. Panama uses the US dollar (locally the balboa), so change your pounds to dollars before or on arrival, as sterling is not accepted and island ATMs can be unreliable. No vaccinations are required, but a travel-health clinic can advise on hepatitis A, typhoid and mosquito precautions for the islands.
