Overview
Cayo Largo del Sur is a slender, palm-fringed island off Cuba's southern coast, part of the Canarreos Archipelago. It is a pure beach destination: around 25 km of soft white sand, warm shallow lagoons and almost no traffic. There is no real town here, just a handful of all-inclusive resorts, a marina and the small airport. Almost every journey from the UK involves a connection in Havana, so a little planning goes a long way when you are hunting for cheap flights to Cayo Largo del Sur.
Best time to fly to Cayo Largo del Sur
The dry season runs from late November to April, with warm days of around 25-29°C, low humidity and dependable sunshine. This is peak season, and flights over Christmas, New Year and February half-term are the priciest of the year. May and June are hotter but still largely dry and noticeably better value. The Atlantic hurricane season spans June to November, with September and October the wettest and least predictable months. For the current picture, see the When to book chart above.
Airlines and routes
There are no scheduled year-round direct flights from the UK to Cayo Largo del Sur. The usual approach is to fly into Havana and connect onto a short domestic flight. Virgin Atlantic flies non-stop from London Heathrow to Havana in around 10 hours; one-stop alternatives run via Madrid (Iberia, Air Europa) or Paris (Air France). From Havana, the Cuban carrier Aerogaviota operates the 40-minute hop to Cayo Largo. Allowing for the connection, plan on roughly 15-18 hours in total. Direct charter programmes have served the island in some past winters, so check the routes on this page for current options.
Things to do in Cayo Largo del Sur
Days here revolve around the beach, the reef and easy boat trips.
- Playa Sirena: the island's headline beach, with powder-soft sand, calm clear water and watersports.
- Playa Paraíso: a shallow sandbar lagoon beside Sirena, famous for its sunsets.
- Sea Turtle Sanctuary: a small conservation centre near the marina explaining the loggerhead and green turtles that nest on local beaches.
- Cayo Iguana: a quick boat ride to an islet colonised by wild rock iguanas.
- Diving and snorkelling: unspoilt reefs, wall dives and wrecks along the offshore barrier reef.
At Vilo Acuña Airport (CYO)
Vilo Acuña Airport sits in the centre of the island, roughly 5-8 km from the resorts on the south-west coast. It is a very small terminal handling domestic and occasional charter flights. Nearly all package holidays include a coach transfer of 10-15 minutes; otherwise shuttle minibuses and taxis meet arrivals. There is no public bus network, so some visitors hire a scooter or buggy locally to get around.
Top tips for finding cheap flights to Cayo Largo del Sur
- Book winter travel two to four months ahead, as Cuba flights fill up early over the December and February peaks.
- Fly midweek and outside the school holidays; a Tuesday or Wednesday departure is often cheaper than a weekend.
- Use flexible date search and the price charts on this page to spot the cheapest week either side of your dates.
- Compare the direct Havana service against one-stop European routings, and factor in the onward domestic flight when you add up the cost.
Travel essentials
UK passport holders need a Cuban Tourist Card (valid 30 days, extendable once) plus a return or onward ticket. Proof of travel insurance with medical cover is a legal condition of entry. The local currency is the Cuban peso, but Cayo Largo's all-inclusive resorts widely accept euros - bring enough cash, as UK debit and credit cards (especially those linked to US banks) often do not work in Cuba. Pack strong sun protection and insect repellent, and note that visiting Cuba can affect your future eligibility for US visa-free travel under the ESTA programme.
