Saint Lucia is one of the Caribbean's most scenic islands, known for the twin Pitons rising straight from the sea, rainforest-clad mountains, drive-in sulphur springs and a string of calm west-coast beaches. English is the official language and the welcome is genuinely warm. For UK travellers it works well as both a honeymoon escape and a relaxed family holiday, and it is a firm winter-sun favourite from November to April.
The dry season runs roughly December to April: warm sunshine, lower humidity and steady trade winds. This is peak season, so demand for flights from the UK is highest around Christmas, February half-term and Easter. May, June and early November are pleasant shoulder periods with fewer crowds and softer fares. The official hurricane season spans June to November, with the wettest weeks usually between August and October. Temperatures sit in the high 20s Celsius all year. See the When to book chart above for how prices shift month to month.
Long-haul flights from the UK land at Hewanorra International Airport (UVF) near Vieux Fort, at the southern tip of the island; this is the airport that handles wide-body aircraft. The smaller George F. L. Charles Airport (SLU) in the capital, Castries, mainly serves short regional hops to Barbados, Antigua, Martinique and other neighbouring islands. If you connect within the Caribbean, you may route via Barbados or Antigua before the final leg into Saint Lucia.
British Airways flies from London Gatwick and Virgin Atlantic from London Heathrow, with a mix of direct and one-stop services depending on the day. TUI Airways operates seasonal direct flights from London Gatwick and Manchester, often sold as part of a package holiday. Direct flying time from London is around nine hours, and the Manchester service is broadly similar. Connecting itineraries through Barbados, Antigua or occasionally North America (which would need a US ESTA or Canadian eTA) can open up more dates and sometimes lower fares. Compare live options using the price charts on this page.
UK passport holders do not need a visa for tourist stays of up to six weeks; your passport should be valid for the duration of your trip, and you may be asked to complete an online immigration and customs form before arrival. The currency is the East Caribbean Dollar (XCD), pegged to the US dollar, and US dollars and major cards are widely accepted in hotels and restaurants. Saint Lucia is four hours behind the UK in winter. The road transfer from Hewanorra to the Rodney Bay and Castries area takes around 60 to 90 minutes, while Soufriere and the Pitons are closer, at roughly 45 minutes to an hour.
Your allowance to Saint Lucia depends on the airline and the fare you book. The table below shows typical long-haul allowances so you know roughly what to expect — always confirm the exact limits with your airline before you fly.
| Fare type | Hand baggage | Checked baggage |
|---|---|---|
| Basic / Light economy | 1 small under-seat bag | Usually none — add for a fee |
| Standard economy | 1 cabin bag + 1 personal item | Typically 1 × 23 kg |
| Premium economy | 1–2 cabin bags + personal item | Typically 2 × 23 kg |
| Business / First | 2 cabin bags + personal item | Typically 2 × 32 kg |
Indicative only. Allowances vary by airline, route and fare — always check your airline's baggage policy.
