Overview
Grand Rapids sits on the Grand River in west Michigan, a short drive from the beaches of Lake Michigan. Once Furniture City, it is now one of the Midwest's most likeable city breaks — a walkable downtown full of craft breweries, galleries and riverside parks that has earned the nickname Beer City USA. It makes a refreshing alternative to America's big-hitters and pairs well with a wider Great Lakes trip. Use the price charts on this page to see how fares are moving before you commit.
Best time to fly to Grand Rapids
Late spring and early autumn are the sweet spot. May, September and October bring mild days, smaller crowds and often better-value fares than the summer peak. Summer (June to August) is warm and busy, with temperatures often in the mid-to-high 20s Celsius and a packed festival calendar, including the huge ArtPrize art competition in early autumn. Winters are cold and snowy thanks to lake-effect snow off Lake Michigan, so pack warm layers from December to March. See the When to book chart above for how prices shift through the year.
Airlines and routes
There are no direct flights from the UK to Grand Rapids, so you will connect through a US hub. Delta, with partners Virgin Atlantic and KLM, routes via Detroit, Minneapolis or Atlanta; American flies via Chicago O'Hare, Philadelphia or Charlotte; and United connects through Newark, Chicago or Washington. From London the transatlantic leg to a hub such as Detroit or Chicago takes around 8 to 8.5 hours, followed by a domestic hop of under an hour on to GRR. Allow roughly 12 to 16 hours door to door including the layover. Departures from Manchester and other UK cities usually route via the same hubs or via Amsterdam.
Things to do in Grand Rapids
The city rewards a relaxed, on-foot pace, with plenty more a short taxi ride away.

- Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum: the riverside museum and resting place of the 38th US president, a Grand Rapids native.
- Grand Rapids Art Museum (GRAM): a light-filled downtown gallery known for its design and modern collections.

- John Ball Zoo: a hillside zoo with a strong conservation focus, popular with families.
At Gerald R. Ford International Airport (GRR)
GRR sits about 13 miles (21 km) south-east of downtown, usually a 20-minute drive. Car hire desks, taxis and rideshare pick-ups are right outside the terminal, and many hotels run shuttles. The Rapid public bus (Route 11) runs to the central station for a low flat fare, but a taxi or rideshare is faster if you have luggage or arrive late.

Travel essentials
UK travellers need an approved ESTA under the Visa Waiver Programme before flying; apply online at least 72 hours ahead and carry a passport valid for the length of your stay. A modest fee applies, paid by card. The currency is the US dollar and cards are accepted almost everywhere, though a little cash is handy for tipping. No special vaccinations are required, but travel insurance with strong medical cover is essential, as US healthcare is costly.
