Overview
Edmonton, the capital of Alberta, is one of Canada's most underrated city breaks and a natural gateway to the Rocky Mountains, Jasper National Park and the wide Canadian prairie. It is a young, energetic place built along the deep, green North Saskatchewan River Valley, with a busy festival calendar, a warm pub-and-coffee culture and genuine wilderness within an hour's drive.
For UK travellers it works well on its own or as the first stop on a wider western Canada itinerary taking in Banff, Calgary and the Icefields Parkway. Use the price charts on this page to see how current fares are moving before you book.
Best time to fly to Edmonton
June to August is peak season: days are long and bright, temperatures often reach the low 20s Celsius, and the city fills with events such as K-Days in July and the Edmonton International Fringe Festival in August, the largest festival of its kind in North America. Expect the strongest demand for flights from London and Manchester then.
Late May, September and early October bring thinner crowds, crisp air and lower fares. Winter is genuinely cold, frequently below minus 15 Celsius, but it is clear and snowy, with a fair chance of the northern lights on trips just outside the city. Check the When to book chart above to line your dates up with cheaper fares.
Airlines and routes
There is currently no year-round direct service from the UK to Edmonton. WestJet has operated a seasonal summer route from London Gatwick, and a non-stop flight covers the distance in around nine hours. Outside that window most travellers connect once. Air Canada routes via Toronto, Montreal, Calgary or Vancouver; KLM connects through Amsterdam, Lufthansa via Frankfurt or Munich, and Icelandair via Reykjavik, which is often a quick hop from both London and Manchester. Connecting journeys typically take 13 to 17 hours depending on the layover.
Things to do in Edmonton
The city mixes big-ticket attractions with an easy-going local scene.
- West Edmonton Mall: one of North America's largest malls, with an indoor water park, roller coasters, and an ice rink under one roof.
- Royal Alberta Museum: the biggest museum in western Canada, strong on natural history and Indigenous culture.
- Old Strathcona and Whyte Avenue: heritage streets full of independent shops, live music, breweries and a weekend farmers' market.
- Fort Edmonton Park: Canada's largest living-history museum, recreating the fur-trade fort and early 1900s streets.
- Elk Island National Park: free-roaming bison and dark-sky stargazing, about 35 minutes east of the city.
At Edmonton International Airport (YEG)
YEG sits roughly 26 km (16 miles) south of the city centre, off the Queen Elizabeth II Highway. A taxi or ride-hailing car reaches downtown in about 30 to 45 minutes. The public Route 747 bus links the terminal with Century Park station on the LRT light-rail line into the centre, while private airport shuttles and all the major car hire firms operate from the terminal.
Top tips for finding cheap flights to Edmonton
- Book early for summer: for June to August travel, reserve four to six months ahead; the price charts on this page show how fares climb as seats sell.
- Fly midweek and off-peak: Tuesday and Wednesday departures, and dates in May, September or October, are usually noticeably cheaper.
- Stay flexible: shifting your trip by a few days, or flying into Calgary and driving up, can cut the total cost.
- Compare connecting carriers: KLM, Lufthansa, Air Canada and Icelandair often undercut a seasonal direct flight, especially from Manchester.
Travel essentials
British passport holders do not need a visa for tourism but must buy an eTA (electronic Travel Authorisation) online before departure; it is inexpensive, approved within minutes for most applicants and linked to your passport. The currency is the Canadian dollar (CAD), and cards are accepted almost everywhere. No special vaccinations are required, but comprehensive travel insurance is essential, as Canadian medical care is costly for visitors. Make sure your passport is valid for the length of your stay.
