Tucked into Peru's sun-baked north, Piura is the gateway to some of the country's finest beaches and a slice of colonial history that rarely makes it onto the standard tourist trail. For UK travellers, flights to Piura mean a journey via Lima, but the reward is a warm, welcoming city surrounded by desert, mangroves and the Pacific surf towns of Máncora and Colán. Whether you're chasing winter sun, waves or a quieter side of Peru, Piura is well worth the connection.
Piura enjoys a warm, dry desert climate for most of the year, making it a solid choice whenever you want to escape the UK winter. The most comfortable months to visit are typically June to November, when temperatures sit in the mid-20s°C and rainfall is minimal. December through April is hotter and more humid, with occasional heavy rain in El Niño years, so pack accordingly and check forecasts closer to travel. For the best fares, use the When to book chart above to see how prices shift across the year.
There are no direct flights to Piura from the UK. The usual route is London to Lima with an airline such as British Airways, Iberia (via Madrid), Air France (via Paris) or KLM (via Amsterdam), followed by a domestic connection to Piura Airport (PIU) with a Peruvian carrier such as LATAM, Sky Airline or JetSmart. The transatlantic leg takes around 11–12 hours, and the domestic Lima–Piura hop is roughly 1 hour 20 minutes, so allow plenty of time for the connection in Lima.
Beyond the airport, Piura opens the door to some of northern Peru's best coastal and cultural experiences.
Piura's airport sits only about 2km from the city centre, so getting into town is quick and straightforward. Taxis and pre-booked transfers wait outside arrivals and typically take 10–15 minutes to reach the centre. There's no dedicated airport bus, so a taxi or arranged transfer is the most reliable option, especially after a long journey via Lima.
UK passport holders do not need a visa for tourist visits to Peru of up to 183 days. The local currency is the Peruvian Sol (PEN), so budget for the domestic leg and any local spending separately from your GBP flight costs. Check the latest entry requirements and any recommended vaccinations with your GP or a travel clinic before you fly, and keep travel insurance in place for the domestic connection as well as the international flight.
