Chiclayo sits on Peru's sun-baked northern coast, the busy capital of the Lambayeque region and the gateway to some of the most astonishing archaeology in the Americas. Nicknamed the "Capital of Friendship", it is an unpretentious working city where you come for Moche and Sicán treasures, excellent seafood and quiet Pacific beaches rather than colonial grandeur. It works best as part of a wider Peru itinerary. There are no direct flights to Chiclayo from the UK, so every trip routes through Lima. Use the price charts on this page to compare your options.
Chiclayo has a warm desert climate and stays dry for most of the year, so there is no genuinely bad time to visit. December to April is the Peruvian summer, hotter and brighter, with the warmest sea for the beaches at Pimentel and Puerto Eten. May to November is cooler and greyer but still mild, usually 18–24°C and comfortable for museums and ruins. UK fares climb over the July–August school holidays and around Christmas; April–May and September–October tend to give the best balance of weather and price. Check the When to book chart above for current trends.
No airline flies non-stop from the UK to Chiclayo, so you connect through Lima. British Airways and LATAM operate direct flights from London to Lima, taking around 12–13 hours; alternatively you can connect in Madrid (Iberia, Air Europa), Amsterdam (KLM), Paris or a US hub such as Miami. From Lima, LATAM, Sky Airline and JetSMART run frequent domestic hops to Chiclayo of about 1 hour 20 minutes. Allow a comfortable connection in Lima: with transfer and check-in, total travel time from the UK is usually 20–26 hours.
The city itself is compact, and the headline sights lie a short drive away in Lambayeque and the surrounding desert.
Cap. FAP José Abelardo Quiñones González International Airport (CIX) is one of the most convenient in Peru, barely 2 km east of the Plaza de Armas. A taxi into the centre takes around 10 minutes and is inexpensive by UK standards; agree the fare before you set off or use a booked transfer. Many hotels arrange airport pick-ups, and colectivos run along the main road nearby. The terminal is small, with ATMs, a café and car hire desks.
UK passport holders do not need a visa to visit Peru as tourists and are usually granted up to 183 days on arrival; your passport should be valid for the length of your stay, with six months the safest margin. There are no compulsory vaccinations for the Chiclayo coast, though a travel clinic may suggest routine boosters, hepatitis A and typhoid; yellow fever cover is only relevant if you continue into the Amazon. The currency is the Peruvian sol (PEN), so carry some cash for taxis and markets and use ATMs for the best rates. Chiclayo is near sea level, so unlike Cusco there is no altitude to worry about. Tap water is not safe to drink; stick to bottled or filtered.
Your allowance to Chiclayo depends on the airline and the fare you book. The table below shows typical long-haul allowances so you know roughly what to expect — always confirm the exact limits with your airline before you fly.
| Fare type | Hand baggage | Checked baggage |
|---|---|---|
| Basic / Light economy | 1 small under-seat bag | Usually none — add for a fee |

| Premium economy | 1–2 cabin bags + personal item | Typically 2 × 23 kg |
| Business / First | 2 cabin bags + personal item | Typically 2 × 32 kg |
