Overview
Caracas, Venezuela's capital, fills a long green valley beneath the Ávila mountain, close to the Caribbean coast but cooled by its 900-metre altitude. Expect lively plazas, strong coffee, salsa rhythms and a proud link to Simón Bolívar, born here in 1783. For UK travellers this is very much a connecting-flight destination, with demand driven largely by family visits, so it pays to plan ahead. Use the price charts on this page to see how fares are moving before you book.
Best time to fly to Caracas
Thanks to the altitude, Caracas stays mild all year, typically 19–27°C, so plan around rainfall rather than temperature. The dry season, roughly December to April, is the most comfortable time to visit, with clear views of the Ávila. The wet season from May to November brings warm afternoons and heavy but usually brief downpours. Fares rise sharply around Christmas and Easter (Semana Santa), when the Venezuelan diaspora travels home; the When to book chart above shows how prices move through the year.
Airlines and routes
There are currently no non-stop flights between the UK and Caracas, so you will change planes once. The most dependable routings combine a short hop from London or Manchester with a transatlantic leg via Madrid (Iberia, Air Europa or Plus Ultra), Lisbon (TAP Air Portugal), Paris (Air France) or Istanbul (Turkish Airlines). The Madrid–Caracas sector runs about nine and a half hours; allow roughly 15–19 hours from the UK in total, depending on your connection and layover.
Things to do in Caracas
Most trips mix city sightseeing with time up the mountain:
- Waraira Repano (El Ávila): ride the cable car from the city for sweeping valley views and cool mountain air.
- Casa Natal del Libertador: the restored birthplace of Simón Bolívar in the colonial old town.
- Plaza Bolívar: the founding heart of the city, beside the cathedral and the National Pantheon.
- Galería de Arte Nacional: Venezuela's leading art collection, next to leafy Parque Los Caobos.
- Parque del Este: the city's favourite green space for a relaxed morning walk.
At Simón Bolívar International Airport (CCS)
The airport sits on the coast at Maiquetía, around 21km from central Caracas, linked to the valley by a motorway, tunnel and viaduct. The transfer usually takes 30–60 minutes depending on traffic. Your safest options are an official airport taxi booked at the desk inside the terminal, or a private transfer arranged in advance through your hotel or through us. Avoid unmarked cars.

Travel essentials
British passport holders can currently visit Venezuela for up to 90 days without a visa; carry a passport valid for at least six months. The currency is the Venezuelan bolívar, but US dollars in cash are widely used for everyday spending and international cards are often unreliable, so bring enough clean, low-denomination notes. Check NHS TravelHealthPro for vaccination advice, and always read the FCDO's Venezuela travel advice before booking.
