Overview
Barcelona sits on Venezuela's north-eastern Caribbean coast, the capital of Anzoátegui state and twin city to the resort town of Puerto La Cruz. It pairs a walkable colonial centre — shady plazas, the Casa Fuerte ruins and a colonial cathedral — with easy access to the islands and beaches of Mochima National Park. Most UK visitors come to mix a little history with a lot of coastline. The airport, General José Antonio Anzoátegui International (BLA), is the gateway for the whole Puerto La Cruz area. Before booking, check the latest FCDO travel advice for Venezuela and confirm your travel insurance covers the trip.
Best time to fly to Barcelona
The coast is warm all year, usually 27–32°C, and lies south of the Caribbean hurricane belt. The driest, brightest months run from December to April — ideal for boat trips and snorkelling around Mochima. The wetter season from May to November brings heavier afternoon showers but greener scenery and quieter beaches. Demand and fares rise around Christmas, Carnival (February or March) and Semana Santa (Easter), so travelling just outside those windows is usually cheaper. See the When to book chart above for how prices move through the year.
Airlines and routes
There are no direct flights from the UK to Barcelona; every routing involves at least one connection, and usually two. The most common path is via Madrid with Iberia, Air Europa or Plus Ultra to Caracas, then a short domestic hop to BLA with a Venezuelan carrier such as Laser or Estelar. Copa Airlines also links Barcelona to its Panama City hub, which connects on to Europe, while Lisbon with TAP Air Portugal and Istanbul with Turkish Airlines are further one-stop options into Caracas. Allow roughly 16–24 hours in total depending on connections; the transatlantic leg alone is about 9–10 hours.
Things to do in Barcelona
The city works best as a base: history in the morning, the coast in the afternoon.
- Casa Fuerte: Atmospheric ruins of a fortified mission, a landmark of Venezuela's War of Independence.
- Cathedral of San Cristóbal: The colonial cathedral on Plaza Boyacá, at the heart of the old town.
- Museo de Anzoátegui: Regional history and independence-era pieces in a restored colonial house.
- Mochima National Park: A short drive away, with island-hopping boat trips, clear water and snorkelling.
- Playa Colorada and Playa Arapito: Well-loved red-sand and palm-backed beaches on the road towards Cumaná.
At General José Antonio Anzoátegui International Airport (BLA)
The airport is around 3 km south-west of Barcelona city centre, usually under 15 minutes by road, and about 20 km from the hotels of Puerto La Cruz and El Morro, roughly 30–40 minutes. There is no train or metro; official airport taxis are the standard way in, and many hotels will arrange a transfer if you ask ahead. Agree the fare before you set off and carry small denominations of US dollars, which drivers generally prefer.
Top tips for finding cheap flights to Barcelona
- Book ahead: For long-haul trips with connections, fares are usually best two to four months out — check the price charts on this page.
- Skip the peaks: Christmas, Carnival and Easter are dearest; a week either side can cost noticeably less.
- Stay flexible: Flying midweek and shifting your dates by a day or two often lowers the fare — use the flexible-date view above.
- Compare hubs: Weigh Madrid, Lisbon, Istanbul and Panama City routings side by side, as the cheapest connection shifts with the season.
Travel essentials
British passport holders do not usually need a visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days and are given an entry stamp on arrival; carry a passport with at least six months' validity. The local currency is the Venezuelan bolívar (VES), but US dollars in cash are widely used and far more practical than sterling — foreign cards and ATMs are unreliable, so bring enough cash. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is recommended, and check TravelHealthPro or an NHS travel clinic for malaria and other advice well before you fly. Always read the current FCDO advice for Venezuela before you travel.
