Overview
Ciudad del Este sits at Paraguay's eastern edge, where the country meets Brazil and Argentina at the meeting of the Paraná and Iguazú rivers. It is famous as a huge duty-free shopping city and as the gateway to the Itaipú Dam and the nearby Iguazú Falls. For UK travellers it usually forms one leg of a wider South American trip, and every route from Britain needs at least one change of plane. The price charts on this page show how live fares are moving before you commit.
Best time to fly to Ciudad del Este
The region has a humid subtropical climate. The most comfortable months are the Paraguayan winter, from June to August, when days are milder and drier and touring the dam and waterfalls is far more pleasant. December to February is hot and sticky, with afternoons often past 35°C and frequent thunderstorms. April, May, September and October are agreeable shoulder months that often bring better fares; UK school holidays fall in the cooler, busier season, so book early and check the When to book chart above.
Airlines and routes
There are no direct flights from the UK to Ciudad del Este, or anywhere in Paraguay. The usual approach is London to São Paulo–Guarulhos with British Airways or LATAM, around 11 to 12 hours, then a connection to Guaraní International Airport with LATAM or GOL, roughly one hour 45 minutes. Other options route via Madrid or Lisbon to Asunción with Iberia, Air Europa or TAP Air Portugal, or through Buenos Aires or Panama City with Copa Airlines. With the layover, plan on 18 to 24 hours in total.
Things to do in Ciudad del Este
Compact and lively, the city is worth a day or two alongside the falls.
- Itaipú Dam: guided day and floodlit evening tours of one of the world's largest hydroelectric plants.
- Saltos del Monday: a broad, thundering waterfall just south of the city and far quieter than its neighbour.
- Iguazú Falls: one of the planet's great natural sights, an easy day trip across the border.
- Hito Tres Fronteras: the riverside marker where Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina meet.
- Microcentro: the famous grid of arcades selling electronics, coffee and crafts.
At Guaraní International Airport (AGT)
The airport lies near Minga Guazú, about 30 km east of central Ciudad del Este, a drive of 30 to 45 minutes. Official taxis wait outside the terminal and app-based services such as Bolt operate locally. Many hotels arrange private transfers, and public buses run along Route 2 towards the city and the Brazilian border.
Top tips for finding cheap flights to Ciudad del Este
- Book roughly two to five months ahead; last-minute long-haul fares to South America rarely drop.
- Fly midweek and avoid the June–August and Christmas peaks where you can.
- Keep your dates flexible and compare the São Paulo, Asunción and Buenos Aires routings side by side.
- Check whether a long-haul ticket plus a separate regional flight beats a single through-fare.
Travel essentials
UK passport holders do not need a visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days in Paraguay; your passport should be valid for the length of your stay. The currency is the Paraguayan guaraní, though US dollars are widely used in the shopping district and cards are accepted in hotels and larger shops. A yellow fever vaccination is recommended and may be checked at land borders, so read the latest GOV.UK and NHS Fit for Travel guidance before you fly.
