Overview
Madrid, Spain's high, sunlit capital, is one of the easiest city breaks to reach from the UK. Grand boulevards, world-class galleries, late-night tapas bars and a genuinely walkable centre make it a firm favourite for weekends and longer stays alike. With dozens of daily departures from airports across Britain, finding cheap flights to Madrid is rarely difficult if you know when to look.
Best time to fly to Madrid
Spring (April to June) and early autumn (September to October) are the sweet spots, with warm, comfortable days for sightseeing. July and August are reliably hot, often above 35C, though many locals leave the city and some hotels ease their rates. Winters are cold and clear rather than wet, and the run-up to Christmas is atmospheric. For a sense of how fares move through the year, see the When to book chart above.
Airlines and routes
British Airways and Iberia operate frequent flights from London to Madrid, mainly from Heathrow and Gatwick, while easyJet, Ryanair and Vueling add lower-cost options from Gatwick, Stansted, Luton and London City. Regional departures run from Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Bristol on carriers including Ryanair, easyJet, Iberia and Jet2. Nearly all UK routes are direct: reckon on about 2 hours 20 minutes from London and roughly 2 hours 40 minutes from Manchester. Connecting options via Amsterdam, Paris or Lisbon exist but rarely beat a nonstop.
Things to do in Madrid
The city rewards both museum-goers and aimless wanderers. A few highlights:
- Museo del Prado: one of Europe's great art collections, strong on Velazquez, Goya and the Spanish masters.
- Retiro Park: lakeside rowing boats, shady paths and the glass Crystal Palace, a short stroll from the centre.
- Royal Palace: the vast official royal residence, with opulent state rooms open to visitors.
- Reina Sofia Museum: home to Picasso's Guernica and outstanding modern Spanish art.
- Plaza Mayor and Mercado de San Miguel: the historic arcaded square and a buzzing covered market for tapas.
At Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD)
Barajas sits about 12 km north-east of the city centre and is well connected. Metro Line 8 runs from the terminals to Nuevos Ministerios in around 15 minutes; the 24-hour Airport Express bus serves Atocha and Cibeles; and Cercanias commuter trains link Terminal 4 with the main stations. Official taxis charge a fixed flat fare to and from the centre, and all the major car hire firms are on site.
Top tips for finding cheap flights to Madrid
- Book roughly one to three months ahead for the best balance of price and choice; last-minute city-break fares are seldom kind.
- Fly midweek where you can - Tuesday and Wednesday departures are usually cheaper than Friday or Sunday.
- Use flexible date search and compare the price charts on this page to spot the cheapest week.
- Check budget and full-service airlines side by side; once baggage is added, British Airways or Iberia can match easyJet or Ryanair.
