Overview
Debrecen is Hungary's second city and the unofficial capital of the Great Plain. Expect a grand Reformed church, thermal spas set in ancient oak forest, a lively university crowd and easy access to the UNESCO-listed Hortobagy puszta — all calmer and better value than Budapest. It works well as a relaxed city break or as a gateway to eastern Hungary.
Best time to fly to Debrecen
Late spring (May and June) and September bring warm, comfortable days for exploring the centre and the Great Forest park. July and August are hot, often near 30°C, and prices rise as the city fills for its Flower Carnival around 20 August. Winters are cold and sometimes snowy, but quiet and inexpensive. Check the When to book chart above to see how fares move through the year.
Airlines and routes
Wizz Air is the main carrier flying UK travellers to Debrecen, with direct flights from London Luton a few times a week and a typical flight time of about 2 hours 40 minutes. It is a seasonal, limited route, so if the dates do not suit, most travellers fly to Budapest — served from many UK airports by Wizz Air, Ryanair, easyJet, Jet2 and British Airways — then take a direct InterCity train on to Debrecen in around 2 hours 45 minutes. Connecting flights via Vienna, Warsaw or Munich are also possible.
Things to do in Debrecen
The compact centre is easily walkable, with the Hortobagy plains a short trip west.
- Great Reformed Church: The yellow twin-towered landmark on Kossuth ter, symbol of "the Calvinist Rome" and a key site in Hungarian history.
- Deri Museum: Home to Mihaly Munkacsy's monumental Christ trilogy, alongside archaeology and fine art.
- Nagyerdo (Great Forest) Park: Ancient oak woodland with the Aquaticum thermal baths, a boating lake and the city zoo.
- Reformed College: A centuries-old seat of Protestant learning with a historic library and museum.
- Hortobagy National Park: Europe's largest protected grassland, known for grey cattle, shepherds and the Nine-Arch Bridge.
At Debrecen International Airport (DEB)
The airport is about 5 km southeast of the centre, roughly 10 to 15 minutes by road. An airport shuttle bus meets scheduled flights and runs to the main square and railway station, and taxis are plentiful and inexpensive by UK standards. With such a small city, most hotels are only a short ride away.
Top tips for finding cheap flights to Debrecen
- Book roughly one to three months ahead — seats on the limited Debrecen service climb quickly close to departure.
- Choose midweek departures; Tuesdays and Wednesdays are usually cheaper than Fridays or Sundays.
- Avoid the August Flower Carnival week and UK school holidays, and use the price charts on this page to spot cheaper dates.
- Compare the direct Luton flight with a Budapest fare plus train — the connection sometimes wins on both price and frequency.
Travel essentials
UK passport holders do not need a visa for short stays in Hungary, which is in the Schengen area: up to 90 days in any 180-day period (the EU's ETIAS authorisation is expected to apply to UK visitors once it launches). Your passport should be valid for at least three months beyond your departure date and less than 10 years old. The currency is the Hungarian forint, not the euro — cards are widely accepted, but carry some cash for markets and rural trips. Bring a UK GHIC or EHIC for state healthcare and take out travel insurance; no special vaccinations are required.
