North Macedonia is one of the Balkans' most rewarding short-haul discoveries: a compact, mountainous country of Ottoman bazaars, frescoed lakeside churches and warm, unhurried hospitality. For UK travellers it delivers big scenery and low prices without a long flight. Skopje, the lively capital, makes a natural base, while Ohrid draws visitors for its old town and the vast blue lake on the Albanian border. Whether you want a city break, a hiking trip or a relaxed week by the water, cheap flights to North Macedonia are easier to find than most people expect.
Late spring (May and June) and early autumn (September and October) are the sweet spot: warm, settled days, thinner crowds and the widest choice of fares. July and August are hot, with Skopje regularly climbing above 32°C, though Ohrid and the mountain national parks stay more comfortable. Winter is quiet but scenic, with skiing at Mavrovo and festive markets in Skopje. Check the When to book chart above to see how prices shift through the year.
Skopje International Airport (SKP) is the country's principal gateway, around 20km from the capital and the arrival point for almost all UK travellers. Ohrid "St. Paul the Apostle" Airport (OHD) in the south-west handles mainly seasonal summer traffic and is the more convenient choice if Lake Ohrid is your main destination. Both are small, modern and quick to clear.
Wizz Air is the main carrier linking the UK with North Macedonia, with year-round direct flights from London Luton to Skopje and seasonal summer services from Luton to Ohrid. Direct flights from London take roughly 3 hours. There are currently no direct flights from Manchester or other regional airports, so you would connect through a European hub — Vienna with Austrian Airlines, Frankfurt or Munich with Lufthansa, Istanbul with Turkish Airlines, or Belgrade with Air Serbia — for a total journey of around 6 to 9 hours depending on the layover.
UK passport holders can visit North Macedonia visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period for tourism; your passport should be valid for the length of your stay. The currency is the Macedonian denar (MKD); cards are widely accepted in cities, but carry some cash for rural areas and small cafés. For the best fares, aim to book two to three months ahead for summer travel and use the price charts on this page to time your booking.
Your allowance to North Macedonia depends on the airline and the fare you book. The table below shows typical long-haul allowances so you know roughly what to expect — always confirm the exact limits with your airline before you fly.
| Fare type | Hand baggage | Checked baggage |
|---|---|---|
| Basic / Light economy | 1 small under-seat bag | Usually none — add for a fee |
| Standard economy | 1 cabin bag + 1 personal item | Typically 1 × 23 kg |
| Premium economy | 1–2 cabin bags + personal item | Typically 2 × 23 kg |
| Business / First | 2 cabin bags + personal item | Typically 2 × 32 kg |
