Overview
Bulgaria's capital sits in a valley beneath Mount Vitosha, and it rewards travellers who like their city breaks affordable, walkable and a little off the beaten track. Roman ruins, gold-domed churches, open-air mineral springs and a lively café culture all cluster within a compact centre, while the ski slopes of Vitosha are barely half an hour away. Direct flights from the UK take around three hours, so a long weekend is entirely realistic.
Best time to fly to Sofia
Sofia has a proper continental climate: warm summers, often in the high 20s Celsius, and cold, snowy winters. Late spring (May and June) and early autumn (September and October) bring mild days, thinner crowds and the widest choice of well-priced seats. Winter suits skiers and Christmas-market visitors, though demand and fares climb over the festive period and February half-term. For the current picture, check the When to book chart above.
Airlines and routes
Wizz Air is the dominant carrier, with a base in Sofia and direct flights from London Luton (its main UK hub) and London Gatwick, plus Birmingham. Ryanair flies direct from London Stansted and Manchester, and British Airways operates from Heathrow. Flight time is roughly 3 hours 10 minutes from London and about 3 hours 20 minutes from Manchester. Connecting services via hubs such as Frankfurt, Vienna, Amsterdam or Istanbul add flexibility on price and timings when a direct flight doesn't suit.
Things to do in Sofia
Sofia's highlights are easy to string together on foot, with the metro filling any gaps.
- Alexander Nevsky Cathedral: the city's landmark, a vast neo-Byzantine church with golden domes and a crypt of religious icons.
- Ancient Serdica complex: excavated Roman streets and buildings on display in the open air around Serdika metro station.
- Boyana Church: a small UNESCO-listed church on the edge of town, famous for its strikingly lifelike 13th-century frescoes.
- Vitosha Boulevard: the pedestrianised main drag for coffee, shopping and mountain views down the street.
- Mount Vitosha: hiking trails in summer and ski runs in winter, reachable in under an hour from the centre.
At Sofia Airport (SOF)
Sofia Airport lies about 10km east of the centre. Terminal 2 handles almost all UK flights and connects directly to the city on metro line M1/M4, reaching the middle in around 20 minutes for a low flat fare. Buses 84 and 384 are cheaper still, while official OK Supertrans taxis from the marked rank take 20–30 minutes depending on traffic. Make sure the meter is running before you set off.
