Slovakia is one of Central Europe's most rewarding short-haul escapes — a small country with a storybook capital on the Danube, castle-topped hills and the alpine drama of the High Tatras. It's quick to reach from the UK and easy to fold into a wider trip through Vienna, Budapest or Kraków. This hub covers the main Slovak cities we fly to and how to get the best value on the way.
Slovakia has a continental climate: warm summers and cold, snowy winters. May, June and September are the sweet spot for city breaks and hiking — mild days, thinner crowds and lower fares than peak summer. July and August are the warmest and busiest. December to March brings reliable skiing in the High Tatras, and flights around half-term and Christmas sell out early. See the When to book chart above for how fares move through the year.
Ryanair is the main direct operator, flying London Stansted to Bratislava, while Wizz Air links London Luton with Košice. Schedules vary by season, so check current timetables. Many UK travellers instead fly into Vienna — served from across the UK by British Airways, easyJet, Ryanair and Eurowings — and transfer by coach to Bratislava in about an hour. From Manchester you'll usually connect through a hub such as Amsterdam or Frankfurt with KLM or Lufthansa. Flying time from London to Bratislava or Vienna is around two and a half hours.
UK passport holders don't need a visa to visit Slovakia and can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period; your passport should be valid for your whole stay. The EU plans to introduce its ETIAS travel authorisation, so check GOV.UK before booking. The currency is the euro (€) and cards are widely accepted. Book a few months ahead for summer and ski dates, and use the price charts on this page.
Your allowance to Slovakia depends on the airline and the fare you book. The table below shows typical long-haul allowances so you know roughly what to expect — always confirm the exact limits with your airline before you fly.
| Fare type | Hand baggage | Checked baggage |
|---|---|---|
| Basic / Light economy | 1 small under-seat bag | Usually none — add for a fee |
| Standard economy | 1 cabin bag + 1 personal item | Typically 1 × 23 kg |
| Premium economy | 1–2 cabin bags + personal item | Typically 2 × 23 kg |
| Business / First | 2 cabin bags + personal item | Typically 2 × 32 kg |
Indicative only. Allowances vary by airline, route and fare — always check your airline's baggage policy.
