Overview
Fergana is the graceful, leafy capital of Uzbekistan's Fergana Valley, a fertile bowl of orchards, silk workshops and craft towns ringed by the Tian Shan and Pamir-Alay mountains. Laid out by Russian planners in the 19th century, the city has wide tree-lined avenues, a relaxed pace and makes an ideal base for exploring Margilan, Rishtan and Kokand. It sees far fewer visitors than Samarkand or Bukhara, so it rewards travellers looking for genuine Uzbek craftsmanship and hospitality. There are no direct flights to Fergana from the UK, but connections through Tashkent are quick and straightforward. Use the price charts on this page to see current fares and the cheapest dates to travel.
Best time to fly to Fergana
The Fergana Valley has a continental climate. Spring (April to early June) and autumn (September to October) are the most comfortable times to visit, with warm days, cool evenings and the bazaars at their liveliest; the spring blossom and the autumn harvest are both lovely. July and August are very hot, often above 35C, while winters are cold and can dip below freezing with occasional snow. Flights from the UK tend to be cheaper outside the summer peak and the New Year period, so check the When to book chart above for the current picture.
Airlines and routes
No airline flies non-stop from the UK to Fergana. The usual approach is to fly into Tashkent, then take a short onward hop. Uzbekistan Airways operates direct flights from London Heathrow to Tashkent in around seven hours. Turkish Airlines connects several UK airports to Tashkent via Istanbul, and other one-stop options run through Istanbul or the Gulf. From Tashkent, Uzbekistan Airways flies on to Fergana in under an hour, or you can travel overland across the Kamchik Pass by shared taxi or train in roughly four to five hours. Booking the long-haul and domestic legs together usually keeps the fare down.
Things to do in Fergana
Fergana itself is calm and green; the real draw is the cluster of craft towns within easy reach.
- Yodgorlik Silk Factory, Margilan: Watch atlas and adras silk being hand-woven and dyed using centuries-old methods.
- Kumtepa Bazaar: A vast, colourful market near Margilan, busiest on Thursdays and Sundays, piled high with fabric and produce.
- Rishtan: Uzbekistan's ceramics capital, famed for its glowing turquoise and blue glazed pottery.
- Khudayar Khan's Palace, Kokand: The lavishly tiled 19th-century palace of the last ruler of the Kokand Khanate.
- Al-Farghani Park and the Regional Museum: A pleasant afternoon among fountains, statues and displays on the valley's history.
At Fergana International Airport (FEG)
Fergana International Airport is small and sits about 5km from the centre, roughly a 10 to 15 minute drive. There is no airport train or useful bus, so most arrivals take a taxi; agree the fare first or use the Yandex Go app, which is widely used across Uzbekistan and usually cheaper. Hotels can arrange a pick-up if you send your flight details in advance. The domestic terminal handles the frequent Tashkent service.

Travel essentials
British passport holders do not need a visa for stays of up to 30 days; your passport should be valid for the duration of your trip. The currency is the Uzbekistani som; carry some cash for markets and taxis, though cards are accepted in city hotels and larger shops, and ATMs are available in Fergana. Bring clean pounds or US dollars to exchange if needed. No special vaccinations are required for most travellers, but check the latest NHS Fit for Travel and FCDO advice before you go, and choose travel insurance that covers the domestic flight.
