Timor-Leste (East Timor) is one of Asia's youngest and least-visited countries, taking up the eastern half of the island of Timor plus the Oecusse enclave. UK travellers who make the journey are rewarded with near-empty beaches, some of the most biodiverse coral reefs on the planet around Atauro Island, coffee-growing highlands and a warm culture shaped by Portuguese and Indonesian history. The capital, Dili, is the arrival point for almost every visitor. There are no direct flights from the UK, so expect one or two connections on the way.
The dry season, roughly May to November, is the most comfortable time to visit: sunny days, lower humidity and calm seas for diving and snorkelling off Atauro and Dili, plus the best conditions for trekking Mount Ramelau. The wet season, December to April, brings heavy afternoon rain that can close mountain roads, though the scenery is lush and green. Dive visibility is generally good from about April to December, and whales pass through the Ombai Strait in October and November. Fares often ease in the shoulder months of March, April and November — see the When to book chart above for current trends.
Presidente Nicolau Lobato International Airport (DIL) in Dili is effectively the country's only international gateway — a small terminal about 4km west of the centre, 10–15 minutes away by taxi. Most UK itineraries connect through Denpasar (Bali) in Indonesia, Singapore, or Darwin in northern Australia, so one of these becomes your practical connecting hub.
No airline flies between the UK and Timor-Leste directly. The usual approach is a long-haul flight from London Heathrow or Manchester to Singapore or Bali with a carrier such as Singapore Airlines, Emirates, Qatar Airways or Garuda Indonesia, then a regional flight on to Dili. Aero Dili (the national carrier), Citilink and Batik Air serve the short hop from Denpasar, while Airnorth connects Dili with Darwin. Total travel time from London is typically 20–28 hours depending on connections; from Manchester allow a little longer, as an extra connecting flight is usually needed. The Denpasar–Dili leg itself takes under two hours.
Most UK passport holders can obtain a visa on arrival at Dili airport, currently around US$30 for a 30-day stay; if you enter overland from Indonesian West Timor you must arrange a visa in advance, so flying in is simpler. Carry a passport with at least six months' validity. The official currency is the US dollar, with local centavo coins for small change — bring clean dollar notes in cash, as ATMs are scarce outside Dili and cards are seldom accepted. Check the latest FCDO travel advice before you go, and book two to four months ahead for the best fares.
