Overview
Indonesia's sprawling capital, Jakarta, is the gateway to the archipelago and a city of contrasts – glassy skyscrapers and buzzing malls alongside colonial squares, canal-side kampungs and some of Southeast Asia's best street food. Most UK travellers pass through en route to Bali, Yogyakarta or the islands, but Jakarta rewards a day or two of exploring. This guide covers when to fly, which airlines serve the route, and how to keep the cost of flights to Jakarta from the UK down.
Best time to fly to Jakarta
Jakarta sits just south of the equator, so it is hot and humid all year, with daytime temperatures around 30–32°C. The main dry season runs from roughly May to September and is the most comfortable time to visit, with June to August the driest. The wet season (October to April) brings heavy afternoon downpours and occasional flooding, peaking in January and February. Fares tend to climb around the July–August school holidays and over Christmas; for a better balance of weather and price, check the When to book chart above and consider shoulder months such as May or September.
Airlines and routes
There are currently no non-stop flights between the UK and Jakarta, so you will change planes once. Popular one-stop options include Qatar Airways via Doha, Emirates via Dubai and Etihad via Abu Dhabi, plus Singapore Airlines via Singapore, Malaysia Airlines via Kuala Lumpur, Turkish Airlines via Istanbul and KLM via Amsterdam. Total journey time is typically around 16–18 hours from London depending on your layover; the Gulf carriers are often quickest, while a Singapore or Kuala Lumpur connection lets you break the trip. Most services start at London Heathrow, with convenient connections from Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Glasgow via European and Gulf hubs.
Things to do in Jakarta
Give yourself a day or two to scratch the surface of the capital:
- Kota Tua (Old Batavia): restored Dutch-era squares, museums and cafés in the historic colonial quarter.
- National Monument (Monas): the towering obelisk in Merdeka Square, with wide city views from the observation deck.
- Istiqlal Mosque and Jakarta Cathedral: Southeast Asia's largest mosque, facing the Catholic cathedral across the street.
- National Museum of Indonesia: a superb collection spanning the country's history, cultures and antiquities.
- Glodok (Chinatown): temples, bustling markets and some of the best street food in the city.
At Soekarno–Hatta International Airport (CGK)
Jakarta's main airport is at Tangerang, about 20 km north-west of the city centre. The Soekarno–Hatta Airport Rail Link runs to BNI City and Manggarai stations in around 45–55 minutes and skips the traffic. DAMRI airport buses serve districts across the city, while metered airport taxis and ride-hailing apps such as Grab and Gojek take roughly 45 minutes to an hour by toll road – longer at peak times, so allow plenty of time for your return journey.
Top tips for finding cheap flights to Jakarta
- Book ahead: for long-haul fares to Jakarta, roughly two to five months before departure tends to give the best choice; last-minute prices rarely drop.
- Fly midweek and off-peak: Tuesday and Wednesday departures, and travel in May, September or October, are usually cheaper than weekends and school holidays.
- Stay flexible: shifting your dates by a few days can make a real difference – use the price charts on this page to spot the cheapest departures.
- Compare hubs: check Gulf, Singapore and European connections side by side, and look at regional UK airports as well as Heathrow.
Travel essentials
For tourism, UK passport holders can get a visa on arrival at CGK, or buy an e-VoA online beforehand; it is valid for 30 days and can be extended once. Your passport should have at least six months' validity and a blank page. The currency is the Indonesian rupiah (IDR); cards are widely accepted in malls and hotels, but carry cash for markets and street stalls. No vaccinations are required to enter from the UK, though the NHS suggests being up to date with hepatitis A, typhoid and tetanus – check TravelHealthPro for current advice before you fly, and pack insect repellent as dengue occurs year-round.
