Overview
Jayapura is the lively capital of Indonesia's Papua province, set around a hilly bay on the north coast of New Guinea. It's a true frontier city and the gateway to Lake Sentani, Second World War history sites and the forests of the Cyclops Mountains. Reaching it from the UK takes patience, but few places in Southeast Asia feel this far off the beaten track.
Best time to fly to Jayapura
Jayapura sits close to the equator, so it stays hot and humid all year, around 30°C by day. Some rain falls in every month, but the drier, more comfortable stretch runs roughly from May to October, which also brings the Lake Sentani Festival in June. December to March is usually the wettest. Fares track UK school holidays more than the local weather, so check the price charts on this page before fixing your dates.
Airlines and routes
There are currently no non-stop flights between the UK and Indonesia, and none to Jayapura. Most UK travellers fly London to Jakarta with one change — Qatar Airways via Doha, Emirates via Dubai or Singapore Airlines via Singapore — then connect onto a domestic flight with Garuda Indonesia, Batik Air or Lion Air, usually from Jakarta or Makassar. London to Jakarta is around 16–17 hours with one stop; the leg east to Jayapura adds another five to six hours non-stop, or longer routed via Makassar. Allow a full day door to door, ideally with an overnight in Jakarta.
Things to do in Jayapura
A few highlights to build into your trip:
- Lake Sentani: a vast, island-dotted lake beside the airport, ringed by stilt villages and stunning from the hills above.
- MacArthur Monument, Ifar Gunung: a WWII memorial on General MacArthur's former headquarters, with sweeping views over the lake.
- Base G Beach: a long, quiet stretch of white sand north of the city, named during the war years.
- Hamadi: the 1944 Allied landing beach, with rusting wartime relics and a lively local market.
- Youtefa Bay and the Holtekamp Bridge: Jayapura's bright red landmark span, best seen at sunset.
At Sentani Airport (DJJ)
The airport is in Sentani, about 40 km west of central Jayapura — roughly one to one and a half hours by road through the hills, depending on traffic. Airport taxis, pre-booked hotel transfers and car hire are all available, while shared minibuses cover the route more cheaply but take longer. Many visitors simply base themselves in Sentani, which is closer to the lake.
Top tips for finding cheap flights to Jayapura
- Book the international leg around two to three months ahead — last-minute fares on this route rarely drop.
- Price it as two trips, UK to Jakarta and then Jakarta to Jayapura, and compare that against a single through-fare.
- Choose midweek departures and avoid Indonesian peak periods such as Eid (Lebaran), Christmas and New Year.
- Use the When to book chart above to spot the cheaper weeks before you commit.
Travel essentials
UK passport holders can enter Indonesia on a visa on arrival (30 days, extendable once) or arrange an e-VOA online beforehand; your passport needs at least six months' validity. The currency is the Indonesian rupiah — Jayapura hotels take cards, but carry cash for markets and local transport. Papua is a malaria-risk area, so discuss antimalarials and routine vaccinations with a travel clinic well before you go. For trips beyond the city into the highlands, a police permit (surat jalan) is advisable, though it isn't generally needed for Jayapura itself.
