Overview
Denpasar is the capital of Bali and the gateway to Indonesia's most popular island. Most UK travellers pass through on the way to Seminyak, Ubud or Sanur, but the city itself rewards a day with temples, museums and a lively market. Flights land at Ngurah Rai International Airport, close to Kuta and the southern resorts, and searches for cheap flights to Denpasar climb sharply before the British summer.
Best time to fly to Denpasar
Bali has two seasons. The dry season, roughly April to October, brings warm days, lower humidity and the best beach and diving conditions. The wet season, November to March, has heavier afternoon downpours but greener scenery and quieter resorts. July, August and the Christmas to New Year period are the busiest and dearest; late April to June and September offer the best balance of weather and value. See the When to book chart above for how fares shift through the year.
Airlines and routes
There are no direct flights from the UK to Denpasar, so every routing involves at least one change. Common one-stop options include Qatar Airways via Doha, Emirates via Dubai, Etihad via Abu Dhabi, Singapore Airlines via Singapore and Malaysia Airlines via Kuala Lumpur; Turkish Airlines via Istanbul is also worth comparing. Expect around 16 to 18 hours from London with a short layover, and a little longer from Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh or Glasgow, which feed into the same Middle East and Asian hubs.
Things to do in Denpasar
A half or full day covers the highlights before you head to the coast.
- Bajra Sandhi Monument: Dramatic memorial to the Balinese struggle, with city views from the tower.
- Bali Museum: Colonial-era compound covering the island's art, crafts and history.
- Pasar Badung: Bali's largest traditional market, ideal for spices, textiles and street food.
- Puputan Square: Central park and memorial, handy for nearby temples and people-watching.
- Pura Jagatnatha: Denpasar's main Hindu temple, at its liveliest around the full moon.
At Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS)
The airport sits between Kuta and Jimbaran, about 13 km south of central Denpasar, roughly 30 to 45 minutes by road and more in traffic. Use the official fixed-price taxi counters, a pre-booked hotel transfer, or ride-hailing apps such as Grab and Gojek, which have designated pick-up points near the terminal. Kuta is about 10 minutes away, Seminyak 30 to 40 minutes and Ubud around 1.5 hours.
Top tips for finding cheap flights to Denpasar
- Book roughly two to five months ahead for summer and Christmas travel; last-minute Bali fares are rarely cheap.
- Fly midweek and favour shoulder months such as May, June or September for lower fares and thinner crowds.
- Keep your dates flexible and use the price charts on this page to pinpoint the cheapest departures.
- Compare Middle East and Asian hubs side by side, as accepting a slightly longer layover often cuts the fare noticeably.
Travel essentials
UK passport holders can enter Bali on a visa on arrival (currently 30 days, extendable once), bought on the day or online as an e-VOA beforehand; your passport needs at least six months' validity plus an onward or return ticket. Every visitor also pays a separate one-off Bali tourist levy, online or on arrival. The currency is the Indonesian rupiah; cards work in resorts and larger restaurants, but carry cash for markets and rural areas. No vaccinations are required for entry from the UK, but check NHS travel advice on routine jabs and hepatitis A, and follow current government guidance on volcanic activity, well before you fly.
