Overview
Erenhot (also written Erlian) sits on China's northern frontier in Inner Mongolia, right against the Mongolian border. It is a compact city best known for its dinosaur fossils — the surrounding Erlian Basin is one of the richest fossil grounds on earth — and as the rail gateway between China, Mongolia and Russia, where through-trains change wheels for the different track gauge. For UK travellers it is a two-stage journey, but the payoff is genuine Gobi scenery and Mongolian culture in a frontier-town setting.
Best time to fly to Erenhot
Erenhot has a dry continental climate with wide seasonal swings. May to September is the comfortable window, with warm days and the grasslands at their greenest in July and August, when Mongolian summer festivals take place. Spring brings dusty winds off the Gobi, while winters are long, bright and bitterly cold, often well below freezing from November to March. For the best mix of weather and fares, aim for late spring or early autumn and check the When to book chart above.
Airlines and routes
There are no direct flights from the UK to Erenhot. The usual route is London to Beijing non-stop — around 10 hours with Air China — or via a European or Gulf hub, then a domestic flight on to Erenhot Saiwusu International Airport. Domestic services connect Erenhot mainly with Hohhot and Beijing on carriers such as Air China and China Express Airlines, using regional jets. Many travellers instead fly into Hohhot and continue by train or coach across the grasslands. Allow most of a day for the trip and leave a comfortable connection in Beijing.
Things to do in Erenhot
A frontier city with more character than its size suggests:
- Erenhot National Dinosaur Geopark: fossil beds and life-size models on the open steppe, approached beneath two vast dinosaur sculptures that arch over the road.
- Erlian Dinosaur Museum: well-presented skeletons and finds unearthed from the surrounding basin.
- China–Mongolia Border Gate: the frontier marker, monuments and a busy cross-border trade zone.
- Erlian Salt Lake: a shallow, mineral-rich lake just outside town, at its best around sunrise.
- Evening market: Mongolian and northern Chinese food, from hand-pulled lamb to milk tea.
At Erenhot Saiwusu International Airport (ERL)
The airport lies just outside the city, roughly a 20 to 30 minute drive from the centre. There is no rail or metro link, so taxis and hotel pick-ups are the practical options, and fares into town are modest in pound terms. Ask for the meter or agree the fare before setting off.
Top tips for finding cheap flights to Erenhot
- Book the long-haul leg roughly two to five months ahead and use the price charts on this page to spot the cheaper weeks.
- Fly midweek and avoid Chinese public holidays, especially early October and Lunar New Year, when domestic seats are scarce and dear.
- Keep your dates flexible and compare routings via Beijing against flying into Hohhot with an overland transfer.
- Compare full-service carriers and their partner connections rather than booking each leg blind.
Travel essentials
Most UK passport holders can currently enter mainland China without a visa for short stays under a scheme in place through 2026 — always confirm the latest rules and check your passport validity before booking, and look into requirements separately if you plan to cross into Mongolia. The currency is the Chinese yuan (RMB); bank cards and the major mobile-payment apps are widely accepted, but carry some cash for taxis and markets. No special vaccinations are required for most travellers; bring comprehensive travel insurance and pack for a very dry climate with strong sun and cold nights.
