Overview
Batam sits in Indonesia's Riau Islands, just across the strait from Singapore, and makes a relaxed, good-value stop on a wider Southeast Asia trip. The island is known for waterfront resorts, affordable spa and golf packages, fresh seafood and easy island hopping. There are no direct flights from the UK, so you will connect once or twice, or fly to Singapore and cross by ferry in about an hour.
Best time to fly to Batam
Batam is hot and humid year-round, typically 26 to 32C. The drier, brighter months run roughly May to September, the best window for beaches and boat trips. The northeast monsoon from November to March brings heavier rain and choppier ferry crossings, though downpours are often short. Flights to Batam from the UK cost more around the July and August school holidays, Christmas and Chinese New Year, so check the When to book chart above before you fix your dates.
Airlines and routes
No airline flies nonstop from the UK to Batam; most journeys connect through Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or Jakarta. From London, Singapore Airlines and British Airways reach Singapore in about 13 hours, from where frequent ferries take roughly an hour to Batam. Malaysia Airlines flies to Kuala Lumpur in around 12 to 13 hours, connecting to Hang Nadim on AirAsia in about 1 hour 20. Garuda Indonesia routes via Jakarta with a short domestic hop on Batik Air, Lion Air or Citilink. Allow 17 to 20 hours in total, depending on connection times.
Things to do in Batam
A compact island that mixes city buzz with quiet coastline:
- Barelang Bridge: A photogenic chain of six bridges linking Batam to its southern islands.
- Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya: One of Southeast Asia's largest Buddhist temple complexes, in Batam Centre.
- Nagoya: The island's main district for shopping, street food and nightlife.
- Island hopping: Boat trips to Ranoh, Abang and nearby islets for snorkelling and white sand.
- Spa and golf: Well-priced spa treatments and several well-kept championship golf courses.
At Hang Nadim International Airport (BTH)
Hang Nadim sits on the east of the island near Nongsa. Nagoya, the main commercial hub, is about 20 to 25 km away, usually 30 to 40 minutes by road. Use the fixed-fare airport taxis (buy a coupon at the desk), the Grab app, or a pre-booked hotel shuttle. If you arrive by ferry instead, the Batam Centre and Harbour Bay terminals are close to the city and most hotels.
Top tips for finding cheap flights to Batam
- Book the long-haul leg roughly two to five months ahead; last-minute seats to the region are rarely cheap.
- Fly midweek and dodge UK school holidays, as a Tuesday or Wednesday departure often beats weekend fares.
- Keep your dates flexible and use the price charts on this page to find the cheaper weeks.
- Compare a Singapore-and-ferry trip with a single through-ticket via Kuala Lumpur or Jakarta; price and total time can differ widely.
Travel essentials
UK travellers currently need a visa for Indonesia. Most arrive on a Visa on Arrival (about 25 pounds, paid in rupiah or by card), valid for 30 days and extendable once; an e-VOA can be bought online beforehand. Your passport needs at least six months' validity. The currency is the Indonesian rupiah, and cards work in malls and resorts, but carry cash for taxis, ferries and smaller vendors. No vaccinations are required to enter from the UK, but check NHS Fit for Travel for current advice and stick to bottled water.
