Overview
Zahedan is the capital of Iran's Sistan and Baluchestan province, a remote desert city near the borders with Pakistan and Afghanistan. It's not a mainstream package destination — most UK travellers flying to Zahedan are visiting family, on cross-border business, or heading on to explore the region's Baluchi culture and ancient archaeology. It's a fascinating, little-visited corner of Iran, but one that takes some planning to reach.
Best time to fly to Zahedan
Aim for autumn through to spring, roughly October to April, when temperatures are far more manageable. Summers are extreme, regularly topping 40°C, and the region is known for its "120-day wind" season from around June to September, bringing sandstorms and poor visibility. Winter days are mild, though nights turn cold, making the cooler months the best window for flying to Zahedan.
Airlines and routes
There are no direct flights from the UK to Zahedan, or to Iran at all. The usual routing is a flight from London to Tehran's Imam Khomeini Airport via a hub such as Istanbul (Turkish Airlines), Doha (Qatar Airways) or Dubai (Emirates/flydubai), then a domestic connection to Zahedan with a carrier such as Iran Air, Iran Aseman or Zagros Airlines. The domestic leg takes around two hours, with total door-to-door travel from London usually 12–16 hours — see the price charts on this page for current fares.
Things to do in Zahedan
Zahedan is a working provincial capital rather than a tourist hub, but a good base for some remarkable sights nearby.
- Zahedan Bazaar: A lively market for Baluchi handicrafts, embroidery and textiles.
- Shahr-e Sukhteh (Burnt City): A UNESCO-listed archaeological site near Zabol, among the world's oldest known settlements.
- Hamoun Wetland: A seasonal border lake of interest to birdwatchers when water levels allow.
- Mount Taftan: A dormant volcano offering striking desert landscapes further into the province.
- Baluchi culture and cuisine: Distinctive local dishes and traditional dress, different from mainstream Iranian fare.
At Zahedan International Airport (ZAH)
Zahedan International Airport sits just a few kilometres from the city centre. Taxis wait outside arrivals and are the standard way in — agree the fare before you set off, as meters aren't universally used. There's no rail link, so a taxi or a transfer pre-arranged through your host or tour operator is the practical option.
Top tips for finding cheap flights to Zahedan
- Book your international and domestic legs together, and well ahead of travel, as capacity on the Tehran-Zahedan route is limited.
- Flying midweek rather than at weekends can bring the fare down on both legs.
- Keep dates flexible and use the When to book chart above to spot cheaper windows.
- Compare hub options — Istanbul, Doha and Dubai routings vary in price and journey time.
Travel essentials
UK passport holders need an Iranian visa arranged in advance; visa-on-arrival does not apply to British nationals, so sort authorisation through an accredited agency or the Iranian consulate before flying. The currency is the Iranian rial, and UK cards don't work in Iran due to sanctions, so bring sufficient cash. As a border province, it's sensible to check current FCDO travel advice before booking and to travel with a well-informed operator.
