Overview
Tucked into the heart of Colombia's Coffee Triangle, Pereira is the gateway to some of the most beautiful countryside in South America. Surrounded by rolling coffee fincas, cloud forest and the wax palms of the Cocora Valley, this friendly, laid-back city combines genuine Colombian culture with easy access to Salento, the Nevados National Park and the thermal springs near Santa Rosa de Cabal. For UK travellers, Pereira offers an authentic alternative to the more visited Bogotá or Medellín, with a warm climate, welcoming locals and excellent coffee at every turn.
Best time to fly to Pereira
Pereira sits at altitude, which keeps temperatures pleasantly mild year-round, typically between 18°C and 28°C, so there's no single "bad" season weather-wise. Like much of the Colombian Andes, rainfall follows a bimodal pattern, with wetter spells around March to May and September to November, and relatively drier stretches from December to February and June to August. Many UK travellers choose to fly in December and January, when drier weather coincides with the coffee harvest and festive celebrations, or during the UK summer holidays. For the best value, use the When to book chart above to spot lower-fare windows outside these peak periods.
Airlines and routes
There are currently no direct flights from the UK to Pereira, so journeys involve at least one connection. British Airways operates the only nonstop UK–Colombia route, flying London Heathrow to Bogotá in around 11 to 11.5 hours; from there, Avianca or LATAM run frequent short domestic hops of about an hour on to Pereira's Matecaña Airport. Alternatively, Iberia via Madrid or KLM and Air France via their respective European hubs also connect through to Bogotá or Medellín, with an onward domestic leg to Pereira. Travellers connecting via the United States can use American Airlines, Delta or United through Miami, Atlanta or Houston. Total journey times from the UK typically run from around 15 to 19 hours depending on the routing and layover.
Things to do in Pereira
Pereira makes an excellent base for exploring the Eje Cafetero, with plenty to see in the city itself too.
- Plaza de Bolívar: Home to the striking nude equestrian statue of Simón Bolívar by sculptor Rodrigo Arenas Betancourt, a symbol of the city.
- Jardín Botánico UTP: A lush botanical garden on the university campus, home to orchids, butterflies and Andean wax palms.
- Valle de Cocora and Salento: A popular day trip to hike among the world's tallest palm trees and browse Salento's colourful craft shops.
- Termales de Santa Rosa de Cabal: Natural hot springs set beside a waterfall, roughly an hour from the city.
- Coffee farm tours: Visit a working finca cafetera to learn how Colombia's famous coffee is grown, picked and roasted.
At Matecaña International Airport (PEI)
Matecaña International Airport sits only around 5km from Pereira's city centre, making it one of the more convenient airports in the region. Taxis are readily available outside arrivals and typically take 15 to 20 minutes into town, traffic depending. Official airport taxis and ride-hailing apps are both widely used and reasonably priced, while local buses also run into the centre for those travelling light and on a budget.
Top tips for finding cheap flights to Pereira
- Book ahead: Fares to Colombia tend to firm up closer to departure, so booking a few months in advance usually secures better prices, especially for December and January travel.
- Fly midweek: Tuesday and Wednesday departures are often cheaper than weekend flights on the transatlantic leg.
- Stay flexible on dates: Shifting your trip by even a few days can make a noticeable difference, so use the price charts on this page to compare.
- Compare routings: Connecting via Bogotá, Madrid or a US hub can produce very different fares, so it's worth checking more than one airline alliance.
Travel essentials
UK passport holders do not need a visa for tourist visits to Colombia of up to 90 days. Make sure your passport is valid for the duration of your stay, and be ready to show proof of onward travel if asked. The local currency is the Colombian Peso (COP), and it's worth carrying some cash alongside cards, as smaller businesses outside the centre may not accept card payments. No mandatory vaccinations are required for travellers arriving directly from the UK, but it's sensible to check current advice from your GP or a travel clinic before you go, particularly if you plan to visit lower-altitude or jungle areas nearby.
