Liberia sits on West Africa's Atlantic coast: a green, welcoming country of rainforest, surf beaches and a distinctive history founded by freed settlers in the 19th century. Most UK visitors travel for work, family, development and NGO projects or adventurous independent trips, and almost everyone arrives through the capital, Monrovia. There are no direct flights from the UK to Liberia, so every routing involves one connection in Europe or North Africa. Our team books the whole journey and keeps an eye on fares for you.
Liberia has a tropical climate with two clear seasons. The dry season, roughly November to April, brings the most reliable weather and easier road travel, and is the busiest time to fly — see the When to book chart above for how prices move. The rainy season runs from May to October, with very heavy downpours between June and September; flights can be quieter and cheaper then, but expect high humidity and disruption to upcountry travel. A dusty Harmattan haze can settle over the coast in December and January.
Almost all international arrivals land at Roberts International Airport (code ROB), around 50km east of central Monrovia near Harbel — allow an hour or more by road into the city. Spriggs Payne Airport, closer to the centre, mainly handles domestic and regional light aircraft to towns such as Harper and Greenville. Monrovia is the springboard for onward travel across the country.
Because there are no nonstop UK services, you will connect once. Brussels Airlines flies from Brussels to Monrovia and links well with flights from London and other UK airports; Royal Air Maroc connects through Casablanca; and Air France, KLM and Turkish Airlines route via Paris, Amsterdam and Istanbul. From London, expect a total journey of roughly 11–15 hours depending on the connection, and a little more from Manchester, Birmingham or Edinburgh via a European hub. When you search cheap flights to Liberia or flights from London to Liberia, compare a few hub options side by side.
UK passport holders need a visa to enter Liberia; arrange it before you travel through the Liberian Embassy in London, and carry proof of yellow fever vaccination, which is mandatory for entry. The currency is the Liberian dollar, though US dollars are widely accepted for larger payments — bring some cash, as card acceptance is limited outside major hotels. Check the latest FCDO travel advice before booking, and use the When to book chart above to time your booking well.
Your allowance to Liberia depends on the airline and the fare you book. The table below shows typical long-haul allowances so you know roughly what to expect — always confirm the exact limits with your airline before you fly.
| Fare type | Hand baggage | Checked baggage |
|---|---|---|
| Basic / Light economy | 1 small under-seat bag | Usually none — add for a fee |
| Standard economy | 1 cabin bag + 1 personal item | Typically 1 × 23 kg |
| Premium economy | 1–2 cabin bags + personal item | Typically 2 × 23 kg |
| Business / First | 2 cabin bags + personal item | Typically 2 × 32 kg |
Indicative only. Allowances vary by airline, route and fare — always check your airline's baggage policy.
