Overview
Monrovia, Liberia's Atlantic-facing capital, was named after US President James Monroe and shaped by settlers who arrived from America in the 1820s. It appeals to travellers with an interest in West African history, palm-fringed surf beaches and the lively street life along Broad Street. Most UK visitors come for work, family or NGO ties rather than a conventional holiday, and there are no direct flights from the UK.
Best time to fly to Monrovia
Liberia has a tropical climate with two clear seasons. The dry season, roughly late November to April, brings the most reliable weather and is the best time to visit, with December to March the most comfortable. The rainy season runs May to October, and Monrovia is one of the wettest capitals on earth, with downpours peaking from June to September that can disrupt road travel. Fares usually ease outside the December holidays and the summer peak — see the When to book chart above for the current pattern.
Airlines and routes
No airline flies non-stop between the UK and Monrovia. The options most UK travellers use are Brussels Airlines via Brussels, Royal Air Maroc via Casablanca and Air France via Paris, each connecting from London and often from Manchester or Edinburgh on a feeder flight. Turkish Airlines also serves Roberts International via Istanbul. Expect a total journey of roughly 10 to 14 hours from London depending on the layover, and a little longer from Manchester once you add the connection. The main long-haul leg into Roberts International is around 6 to 7 hours' flying time.
Things to do in Monrovia
A short list of the highlights most visitors make time for:
- Providence Island: The 1822 landing site of freed African-Americans, with memorials and Atlantic views.
- National Museum of Liberia: A modest but moving collection on Broad Street covering the country's founding and culture.
- Waterside Market: Monrovia's sprawling, colourful trading hub near the lagoon.
- Ducor Palace Hotel: Hilltop ruins of a once-grand 1960s hotel, with the finest panorama of the city and coast.
- The beaches: ELWA, Silver and CeCe beaches offer Atlantic surf a short drive from the centre.
At Roberts International Airport (ROB)
Roberts International sits about 50km (around 35 miles) south-east of central Monrovia, near Harbel and the Firestone rubber plantation. Allow 60 to 90 minutes for the drive into town. The safest option is a pre-booked hotel transfer or a car with driver; airport taxis are available, but agree the fare before setting off and carry small US dollar notes. There is no rail link and public transport is limited.
Top tips for finding cheap flights to Monrovia
- Book early: fares are usually lowest around two to four months ahead, as connecting seats to Monrovia are limited.
- Travel midweek and off-peak: Tuesday and Wednesday departures outside school holidays and the summer rains tend to be cheaper — see the price charts on this page.
- Stay flexible: shifting your dates by a few days, or flying out through a different European hub, can cut the total cost.
- Compare carriers: check Brussels Airlines, Royal Air Maroc and Air France side by side, as the cheapest routing changes often.
Travel essentials
UK passport holders need a visa to enter Liberia, arranged in advance through the Liberian Embassy in London or the official e-visa system, so apply well ahead of travel. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for entry, and antimalarial tablets are strongly advised. The currency is the Liberian dollar, though US dollars are widely accepted; bring cash, as card acceptance is patchy. Check the latest FCDO travel advice before you book.
