Lesotho, known as the Kingdom in the Sky, is a mountainous, landlocked country encircled entirely by South Africa. It is the only nation on earth lying wholly above 1,000 metres, and its highlands draw walkers, pony trekkers, 4x4 adventurers and, in winter, skiers. There are no direct flights from the UK to Lesotho, so every trip involves a connection, almost always through Johannesburg. This hub covers arriving into Maseru and the practical road alternatives for reaching the kingdom.
Lesotho enjoys a dry, sunny climate for much of the year, but altitude makes the seasons sharp. Spring (September to October) and autumn (April to May) are the sweet spot: mild days, cold nights, clear skies and excellent hiking. Summer (November to March) is the green season, warmer but with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Winter (June to August) brings hard frosts and mountain snow, ideal for Afriski but tougher for touring. Fares track South African demand, so check the When to book chart above before fixing your dates.
No carrier flies from the UK to Lesotho directly. The usual routing is London Heathrow to Johannesburg with British Airways or Virgin Atlantic (around 11 hours nonstop), then a short hop to Maseru with Airlink, which serves the route several times daily in about an hour. One-stop options to Johannesburg also run from UK airports with Emirates (via Dubai), Qatar Airways (via Doha), Ethiopian Airlines (via Addis Ababa), KLM (via Amsterdam) and Turkish Airlines (via Istanbul). From Manchester, Birmingham or Edinburgh, expect at least one stop and a total journey of 16 to 19 hours. Many travellers instead fly into Johannesburg or Bloemfontein and continue by hire car.
UK passport holders do not need a visa for Lesotho for tourist stays of up to 90 days; carry a passport valid for at least six months with blank pages, as you will also transit South Africa. The currency is the Lesotho loti (LSL), pegged one-to-one with the South African rand, which is accepted everywhere in Lesotho. For the best combination of fare and sensible connection times, book two to five months ahead and check the When to book chart above.
Your allowance to Lesotho depends on the airline and the fare you book. The table below shows typical long-haul allowances so you know roughly what to expect — always confirm the exact limits with your airline before you fly.
| Fare type | Hand baggage | Checked baggage |
|---|---|---|
| Basic / Light economy | 1 small under-seat bag | Usually none — add for a fee |
| Standard economy | 1 cabin bag + 1 personal item | Typically 1 × 23 kg |
| Premium economy | 1–2 cabin bags + personal item | Typically 2 × 23 kg |
| Business / First | 2 cabin bags + personal item | Typically 2 × 32 kg |
Indicative only. Allowances vary by airline, route and fare — always check your airline's baggage policy.
