Overview
Asyut is the largest city in Upper Egypt, on the west bank of the Nile roughly midway between Cairo and Luxor. It has been a centre of trade, learning and Coptic Christianity for centuries, yet stays well off the tourist trail. Most UK travellers pair it with a wider Nile Valley programme, and cheap flights to Asyut almost always route through Cairo.
Best time to fly to Asyut
The comfortable season runs from October to April, when days sit in the high teens to mid-twenties Celsius and evenings turn cool. June to September is intensely hot and hard going for sightseeing. Demand climbs around Christmas, Easter and the school holidays, so check the When to book chart above to see how prices shift through the year.
Airlines and routes
There are no direct flights to Asyut from the UK, so the practical route is to fly into Cairo and carry on south. EgyptAir and British Airways fly direct from London Heathrow to Cairo in about five hours, with one-stop options via Europe or the Gulf from regional airports such as Manchester and Birmingham. From Cairo, take an EgyptAir domestic flight when scheduled, or continue by sleeper train or private transfer. Asyut's airport itself mainly handles regional and seasonal pilgrimage traffic.
Things to do in Asyut
The area rewards anyone drawn to ancient Egypt and early Christianity.
- Deir Durunka: a dramatic cliffside Monastery of the Virgin Mary south of the city, and a major Coptic pilgrimage site each August.
- Al-Muharraq Monastery: one of Egypt's most important Coptic monasteries, linked by tradition to the journey of the Holy Family.
- Asyut Barrage: an early twentieth-century dam across the Nile with a breezy riverside walk.
- Tombs of the Nobles: rock-cut tombs of ancient Lycopolis in the western hills, with sweeping views over the city.
- Meir tombs: finely painted tombs of the governors of ancient Cusae, in the desert north-west of Asyut.
At Asyut Airport (ATZ)
Asyut Airport sits around 25 km north-west of the city centre. With no rail or bus link, a taxi or a pre-arranged transfer is the way in, taking roughly 30 to 40 minutes. Agree the fare before you set off, or ask your hotel to send a car. If you connect through Cairo, allow plenty of time to clear immigration and change terminals.

Travel essentials
UK passport holders need a visa for Egypt. The simplest option is the official e-Visa, arranged online before you travel; a visa on arrival is also sold at major Egyptian airports. Your passport should have at least six months' validity. The local currency is the Egyptian pound; sterling exchanges easily, but carry some cash as card payments are patchy outside larger hotels. Check NHS Fit for Travel for recommended vaccinations and read the latest FCDO advice before booking.
