Overview
Maseru, the capital of Lesotho, lies on the Caledon River at around 1,600 metres, ringed by the sandstone hills of the "Mountain Kingdom". It is a calm, walkable base for exploring a country known for pony trekking, high passes and remote highland villages. No airline flies non-stop from the UK, so every trip to Maseru connects, almost always through Johannesburg, but the route is well established and reliable. Use the price charts on this page to compare live fares and to see how your dates and choice of airline change the cost.
Best time to fly to Maseru
Lesotho sits in the Southern Hemisphere, so its seasons are the reverse of ours. September to October and April to May are mild and mostly dry, and are the best months for walking and sightseeing. November to March is warmer and green, with afternoon thunderstorms. June to August is cold, sunny and dry, with frost in Maseru and snow on the peaks, which is when Lesotho's short ski season runs. Flights from the UK tend to cost most over the July to August and Christmas holidays; the When to book chart above highlights the cheaper windows.
Airlines and routes
There are no direct flights from the UK to Maseru. The standard routing is a long-haul flight to Johannesburg, then a short connection on Airlink, which operates the Johannesburg to Maseru leg. British Airways and Virgin Atlantic serve Johannesburg non-stop from London Heathrow in about 11 hours; the hop to Maseru adds roughly an hour, so allow 15 to 17 hours in total once you include the transfer. From Manchester and other regional airports you would connect via London or via a Gulf or European hub such as Emirates, Qatar Airways, KLM or Ethiopian Airlines. Some travellers prefer to fly into Johannesburg and drive the four to five hours to Maseru instead.
Things to do in Maseru
The city itself is compact and easy to cover on foot, and it is also the gateway to the mountains.
- Thaba Bosiu: the flat-topped mountain stronghold where King Moshoeshoe I founded the Basotho nation, with a visitor centre a short drive east of the city.
- Basotho Hat (Setsoto Design): a shop built in the shape of the traditional mokorotlo hat, selling Basotho blankets, tapestries and crafts.
- Our Lady of Victories Cathedral: Maseru's central Roman Catholic cathedral and a well-known city landmark.
- Lancer's Gap: a natural cleft in the Berea Plateau with short walks and sweeping views over Maseru.
- Morija Museum & Archives: an easy day trip south for Basotho history and the nearby dinosaur footprints.
At Moshoeshoe I International Airport (MSU)
Lesotho's main airport sits about 18 km south of central Maseru, a 25 to 30 minute drive. There is no rail or scheduled bus link, so book a hotel transfer in advance or take a taxi from the terminal; some Maseru hotels include a pick-up. Car hire desks are available in the terminal, and driving is on the left as in the UK.
Top tips for finding cheap flights to Maseru
- Book the Johannesburg long-haul around three to six months ahead, and check the When to book chart above for the typical low point.
- Choose mid-week departures and avoid the UK and South African school holidays.
- Use a flexible-date search so you can price the long-haul and the Airlink connection across several days either side.
- Compare a single through-ticket against booking the Airlink leg separately, and check both London and regional departures.
Travel essentials
British passport holders do not need a visa for tourist visits to Lesotho of up to 14 days; carry a passport valid for at least six months with spare blank pages. Because nearly every route transits South Africa, you will also pass through South African immigration, where UK visitors are currently permitted up to 90 days visa-free. The currency is the Lesotho loti (plural maloti), fixed at parity with the South African rand, which is also accepted; cards are fine in Maseru but take cash for rural areas. There is no malaria risk in Lesotho. A yellow fever certificate is required only if you are arriving from a country where yellow fever is present. Check the latest FCDO travel advice before you go.
