Burundi is a small, mountainous country in East Africa's Great Lakes region, sitting on the northern shore of Lake Tanganyika. It is an off-the-beaten-track choice for UK travellers, with tea-covered hills, world-famous drumming traditions, rainforest and lakeside beaches rather than big safari crowds. There are no direct flights from the UK to Burundi, so every journey involves at least one connection through a European or African hub. Bujumbura, the lakeside former capital, is the main arrival point and the base for most trips.
Burundi has an equatorial climate tempered by altitude, so temperatures stay pleasant all year. The long dry season from roughly June to September is the most comfortable time to visit, with better roads for the national parks and reliable weather on the lake. A shorter drier spell falls around December and January, while the heaviest rains come between February and May. Fares often ease outside the July to August and Christmas peaks, so check the When to book chart above for current patterns.
Bujumbura International Airport (BJM), officially Melchior Ndadaye International Airport, is Burundi's only international airport and handles virtually all arriving passengers. It lies about 10 to 15 minutes from central Bujumbura. Gitega, the inland political capital, has no scheduled passenger flights, so travellers heading there land at Bujumbura and continue by road, around two to three hours.
No airline flies non-stop between the UK and Burundi. The most established European routing is with Brussels Airlines via Brussels, which has long served Bujumbura. Strong alternatives connect through African hubs: Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa, Kenya Airways via Nairobi and RwandAir via Kigali. From London you will usually transit once; travellers from Manchester and other regional airports typically route via Brussels or Addis Ababa. Total journey time from London is around 12 to 16 hours depending on the connection, and a little longer from Manchester.
UK passport holders need a visa for Burundi. An e-visa system operates and visas on arrival have been available at Bujumbura, but rules change, so confirm the current process and check FCDO travel advice before booking. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for entry, and malaria precautions are strongly advised. The currency is the Burundian franc (BIF); US dollars are useful for larger payments and card acceptance is limited, so carry cash. For the best value, book a couple of months out and keep an eye on the When to book chart above.
Your allowance to Burundi depends on the airline and the fare you book. The table below shows typical long-haul allowances so you know roughly what to expect — always confirm the exact limits with your airline before you fly.
| Fare type | Hand baggage | Checked baggage |
|---|---|---|
| Basic / Light economy | 1 small under-seat bag | Usually none — add for a fee |
| Standard economy | 1 cabin bag + 1 personal item | Typically 1 × 23 kg |
| Premium economy | 1–2 cabin bags + personal item | Typically 2 × 23 kg |
| Business / First | 2 cabin bags + personal item | Typically 2 × 32 kg |
Indicative only. Allowances vary by airline, route and fare — always check your airline's baggage policy.
