Overview
Fortaleza is the sunlit capital of Ceará on Brazil's north-east coast, where broad city beaches, a lively seafront promenade and warm Atlantic water draw visitors all year round. It also makes a natural gateway to some of the country's most famous stretches of sand, including Cumbuco, Canoa Quebrada and Jericoacoara. This guide covers when to fly, which airlines serve the route from the UK and how to keep the cost down — use the price charts on this page for live fares.
Best time to fly to Fortaleza
Fortaleza is hot and tropical throughout the year, with daytime temperatures usually around 28–31°C. The driest, sunniest months run roughly from July to December, which is the most dependable time for beach days. The wetter season falls between January and May, with the heaviest showers around March and April, though rain often arrives in short bursts rather than lasting all day. Fares tend to peak over the Brazilian summer holidays in December and January, in July and around Carnival, so travelling either side of those dates usually works out cheaper. Check the When to book chart above for current trends.
Airlines and routes
There are no direct flights from the UK to Fortaleza, so every journey involves at least one connection. The most straightforward option is TAP Air Portugal via Lisbon, with feeder flights from London, Manchester and other UK airports linking to the Lisbon–Fortaleza service. Alternative routings connect through São Paulo — for example LATAM from London Heathrow, then a domestic flight on GOL, LATAM or Azul — or through other European hubs. Allowing for the connection, expect a total journey of around 13–15 hours; the long Atlantic leg from Lisbon is roughly seven and a half hours.
Things to do in Fortaleza
The city rewards a few relaxed days before you head further along the coast.
- Praia do Futuro: Fortaleza's best-known beach, lined with barracas serving fried fish and cold drinks.
- Mercado Central: a multi-storey craft market for hammocks, lace, cashew nuts and souvenirs.
- Centro Dragão do Mar: a cultural complex of museums, cinema and nightlife in the Praia de Iracema district.
- Avenida Beira Mar: the Meireles seafront promenade, with a nightly craft fair and plenty of places to eat.
- Beach Park: one of South America's largest water parks, a short drive east at Aquiraz.
At Pinto Martins–Fortaleza International Airport (FOR)
The airport sits about 6 km south of the city centre, roughly 15 minutes from the Meireles and Iracema hotel districts in light traffic. Official taxis and ride-hailing apps such as Uber are the easiest way in and are widely used locally; allow 20–30 minutes to the beachfront. Local buses also connect the terminal with the centre and the seafront for a few reais if you are travelling light.
Top tips for finding cheap flights to Fortaleza
- Book ahead for peak periods: aim to reserve around three to six months before December, January, July and Carnival travel.
- Fly mid-week where you can — Tuesday and Wednesday departures are often cheaper than weekend ones.
- Travel in the shoulder months, roughly September to November, to pair reliable weather with lower fares.
- Compare connecting hubs: a routing via Lisbon and one via São Paulo can differ noticeably in both price and total travel time.
Travel essentials
British passport holders do not need a visa for tourism in Brazil and can normally stay for up to 90 days; your passport should be valid for the duration of your trip, and you may be asked to show onward or return travel. The currency is the Brazilian real (BRL), so check the pound-to-real rate before you go; cards are widely accepted in Fortaleza, though it is worth carrying some cash for beach barracas and markets. For health advice, see a travel clinic or your GP four to six weeks before departure, as vaccinations including yellow fever are recommended for parts of Brazil.
