Overview
Santa Rosa sits in Ecuador's southern El Oro province, a warm coastal region known for its banana plantations, mangrove-fringed islands and easy access to the beaches of Jambeli. Its airport is the gateway for Machala, Puerto Bolivar and the historic gold town of Zaruma. There are no direct flights to Santa Rosa from the UK, but with one or two well-timed connections you can reach this corner of the Pacific coast comfortably. Have a look at the price charts on this page to see how current fares are moving before you book.
Best time to fly to Santa Rosa
The El Oro coast is hot and humid all year. The hottest, rainier months run roughly from January to April, when mornings are often bright and afternoons bring heavy downpours. Between June and November it turns cooler and greyer, with a coastal drizzle known locally as garua. UK travellers tend to go in our summer and over Christmas, so seats and fares are tightest then — check the When to book chart above for the current pattern.
Airlines and routes
From the UK you will normally fly into Quito or Guayaquil and then take a short domestic hop to Santa Rosa. Iberia and Air Europa connect via Madrid, KLM via Amsterdam, and Avianca via Bogota; LATAM also links Ecuador with Europe. Routings through the United States are possible but need an ESTA. Total journey time is usually around 16 to 20 hours including the connection. Guayaquil is the nearest major hub, roughly a three-hour drive from Santa Rosa if you would rather continue by road. Schedules to smaller airports change seasonally, so ask our team for current options.
Things to do in Santa Rosa
Most visitors use Santa Rosa as a base for exploring El Oro:
- Jambeli: a laid-back archipelago of beaches and mangroves, reached by boat from Puerto Bolivar.
- Machala: the self-styled banana capital of the world, with lively markets and a September banana festival.
- Puerto Bolivar: a working port with fresh-seafood eateries and boat trips through the mangrove channels.
- Zaruma: a hillside gold-mining town of timber balconies and steep lanes, about two hours inland.
- Arenillas Ecological Reserve: protected dry forest with birdlife, iguanas and quiet trails near the coast.
At General Manuel Serrano Airport (ETR)
Santa Rosa's airport is small and modern, sitting a few kilometres from the town centre and about 35 to 40 minutes by road from Machala. There is no rail link; taxis wait outside for the short run into Santa Rosa or on to Machala and Puerto Bolivar, and many hotels in the area will arrange a pick-up if you ask in advance. Agree the fare before you set off.
Top tips for finding cheap flights to Santa Rosa
- Book the long-haul legs around two to five months ahead — last-minute fares to Ecuador rarely drop.
- Fly midweek and avoid the July to August and Christmas peaks where you can.
- Keep your dates flexible and compare the Madrid, Amsterdam and Bogota routings; a day either way can shift the price noticeably.
- Price the trip as a through-fare to Santa Rosa and also as Guayaquil plus a separate domestic ticket, then see which wins.
Travel essentials
UK passport holders do not need a visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days in Ecuador, and your passport should be valid for at least six months. Ecuador uses the US dollar, so change your pounds for dollars and carry small notes, as change for large bills can be scarce. No vaccinations are required for the coast, though a travel clinic may suggest routine jabs and a yellow fever vaccine if you are heading on to the Amazon.
