Overview
St John's is the lively capital of Antigua and Barbuda, set on the north-west coast of Antigua around a sheltered natural harbour. It pairs pastel-painted Georgian streets, a busy cruise quay and open-air markets with quick access to the island's famous white-sand beaches. For UK travellers it makes a rewarding winter-sun base, and the flights are refreshingly straightforward.
Best time to fly to St John's
The dry season runs from roughly December to April, with warm days near 28-30°C, lower humidity and steady trade winds. This is peak season, so book well ahead. May, June and late November are pleasant shoulder periods with thinner crowds and generally softer fares. The official Atlantic hurricane season lasts June to November, with the wettest, most humid spell usually in September and October. Check the When to book chart above to see how prices move through the year.
Airlines and routes
Virgin Atlantic and British Airways both operate direct flights from London to Antigua's V.C. Bird International Airport, with BA typically from Gatwick and Virgin from Heathrow. TUI Airways also flies direct on a seasonal basis, including some departures from Manchester. The direct flight from London takes around 8 hours 30 minutes outbound, and a little longer coming home against prevailing headwinds. From Manchester, expect roughly 9 hours direct in season, or a one-stop routing through London the rest of the year. Connecting itineraries via US hubs such as Miami or New York are possible but require prior ESTA authorisation.
Things to do in St John's
The centre is compact and walkable, with plenty to fill a morning before you head to the coast.
- St John's Cathedral: the twin-towered Anglican cathedral that crowns the skyline, rebuilt in the 1840s after earthquake damage.
- Redcliffe Quay: restored 18th-century warehouses now home to boutiques, cafés and craft stalls.
- Heritage Quay: the duty-free shopping precinct beside the cruise berths.
- Museum of Antigua and Barbuda: island history housed in the old colonial courthouse.
- Fort James: an 18th-century gun battery guarding the harbour mouth, with a quiet beach alongside.
At V.C. Bird International Airport (ANU)
The airport sits about 8km (5 miles) north-east of St John's, a 10-15 minute drive. Taxis wait outside the terminal and charge government-set fixed fares rather than using a meter, so confirm the amount before setting off. Many hotels arrange transfers, and car hire desks are available in the terminal — you will need a local temporary driving permit, and remember that Antigua drives on the left. Public buses do not serve the airport directly.
Top tips for finding cheap flights to St John's
- Book roughly three to six months ahead for winter travel; the price charts on this page show the typical booking sweet spot.
- Fly midweek and steer clear of UK school holidays — Tuesday and Wednesday departures are often cheaper than weekend ones.
- Use a flexible-date search to compare a week either side, as shifting by a day or two can cut the fare noticeably.
- Compare Virgin Atlantic, British Airways and TUI, and weigh a one-stop fare against the direct premium.
Travel essentials
UK passport holders do not need a visa for tourist stays of up to six months, but you will need an onward or return ticket and proof of accommodation. The currency is the East Caribbean dollar (XCD), pegged to the US dollar, which is also widely accepted; cards work in hotels and larger shops. No vaccinations are required for travel from the UK, though it is worth checking the latest NHS Fit for Travel and FCDO advice before you go, and packing mosquito repellent.
