Bulgaria packs a lot into a short flight: sandy Black Sea beaches, snow-sure ski resorts in the Rila and Pirin mountains, Roman ruins and, in Plovdiv, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe. It remains one of the better-value destinations in the EU for UK travellers, with direct flights from several UK airports and a typical flying time of around three hours from London. Whether you want a summer week in Sunny Beach or a city break in Sofia, this hub covers every Bulgarian airport we fly to.
For the coast, June to September is peak, with warm seas and reliable sunshine around Burgas and Varna; late May and September are quieter and cooler. The ski season in Bansko, Borovets and Pamporovo runs roughly from mid-December to late March. Sofia and Plovdiv are rewarding year-round but at their best in spring and autumn, when sightseeing is comfortable and fares tend to be lower. Summer weekends and the February half-term ski window are the busiest and most expensive — check the When to book chart above for the current picture.
Sofia Airport (SOF) is the main gateway, well placed for the capital, Rila Monastery and the Borovets and Bansko ski areas. Burgas (BOJ) serves the southern Black Sea resorts including Sunny Beach and Nesebar, while Varna (VAR) covers Golden Sands and the northern coast; both are largely seasonal from the UK. Plovdiv (PDV) is a small airport with limited UK service, useful for southern Bulgaria.
Wizz Air and Ryanair carry most UK–Bulgaria traffic, with direct flights to Sofia from London (Luton, Stansted, Gatwick), Manchester and other regional airports, plus Ryanair service to Plovdiv. British Airways and Bulgaria Air, the national carrier, both fly Heathrow to Sofia, and easyJet serves Sofia from Gatwick. In summer, Jet2 and TUI add direct flights to Burgas and Varna from airports such as Manchester, Birmingham and Newcastle. Manchester to Sofia takes a little over three hours. Out of season, coastal routes usually need a connection via Sofia or a European hub.
Visa: UK passport holders can visit Bulgaria without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Bulgaria is now part of the Schengen area, so time spent in other Schengen countries counts towards that allowance; make sure your passport is valid for your whole stay. Currency: Bulgaria adopted the euro on 1 January 2026, replacing the lev. Cards are widely accepted, though it is worth carrying some cash outside the cities. When to book: use the price and When to book charts above to time your purchase — broadly, several months ahead for peak summer and ski dates, with more flexibility for off-season city breaks.
Your allowance to Bulgaria depends on the airline and the fare you book. The table below shows typical long-haul allowances so you know roughly what to expect — always confirm the exact limits with your airline before you fly.
| Fare type | Hand baggage | Checked baggage |

| Basic / Light economy | 1 small under-seat bag | Usually none — add for a fee |

| Premium economy | 1–2 cabin bags + personal item | Typically 2 × 23 kg |
| Business / First | 2 cabin bags + personal item | Typically 2 × 32 kg |
