For most UK travellers, a trip to Hungary means Budapest — one of Europe's most rewarding city-break destinations, with its grand riverside parliament, atmospheric ruin bars and thermal baths fed by natural hot springs. Venture further and Hungary opens up: the wine towns of Eger and Tokaj, the long summer shoreline of Lake Balaton, and the sun-warmed baroque squares of Pecs. Flights from the UK are short, frequent and among the better-value short-haul options, particularly outside the school holidays.
Spring (April to June) and early autumn (September to October) are ideal: mild, walkable weather, thinner crowds and softer fares. July and August are warm, often above 30C, and the busiest and priciest period, though perfect for Lake Balaton. Winter is cold and can drop below freezing, but December brings Christmas markets and the steaming outdoor baths are a real treat. Check the When to book chart above to see how prices move through the year.
Wizz Air (headquartered in Budapest), Ryanair, easyJet and Jet2.com all run direct flights to Budapest, with British Airways flying from Heathrow. Departure airports include London (Luton, Gatwick, Stansted and Heathrow), Manchester, Bristol, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Leeds Bradford and Liverpool, though the mix changes by season. Typical flight time is about 2 hours 25 minutes from London and roughly 2 hours 40 minutes from Manchester. If your dates or airport lack a direct service, one-stop connections via Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Munich or Vienna are straightforward.
UK passport holders do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period; your passport should be issued within the last 10 years and valid for at least three months after you leave. A European ETIAS travel authorisation is expected to be introduced, so check GOV.UK before you travel. The currency is the Hungarian forint (HUF) — the euro is not generally accepted — though cards are widely used. For city breaks, booking roughly six to ten weeks ahead tends to land the best fares; aim earlier for summer and the Christmas markets, and use the price charts above to time it.
Your allowance to Hungary depends on the airline and the fare you book. The table below shows typical long-haul allowances so you know roughly what to expect — always confirm the exact limits with your airline before you fly.
| Fare type | Hand baggage | Checked baggage |
|---|---|---|
| Basic / Light economy | 1 small under-seat bag | Usually none — add for a fee |
| Standard economy | 1 cabin bag + 1 personal item | Typically 1 × 23 kg |
| Premium economy | 1–2 cabin bags + personal item | Typically 2 × 23 kg |
| Business / First | 2 cabin bags + personal item | Typically 2 × 32 kg |
Indicative only. Allowances vary by airline, route and fare — always check your airline's baggage policy.
