Overview
Port Vila is the capital of Vanuatu, wrapped around a sheltered harbour on the island of Efate in the South Pacific. It is a relaxed, walkable town where Melanesian custom, French and British colonial history and a lively waterfront market sit side by side. It is a genuine long-haul trip from the UK, and many travellers combine it with time in Fiji or Australia.
Best time to fly to Port Vila
The dry season from May to October brings cooler air, lower humidity and the clearest water, making it the most popular time to visit. The wet season, November to April, is hot and humid with heavier downpours and a cyclone risk that peaks between January and March. UK summer holidays fall in the best weather, so book early; for current fare patterns, see the When to book chart above.
Airlines and routes
No airline flies nonstop from the UK to Port Vila, and the former national carrier Air Vanuatu ceased operations in 2024. The most direct option is Fiji Airways from London Gatwick to Nadi, connecting onward to Port Vila (about 1 hour 45 minutes). Alternatively, fly to an Australian gateway such as Brisbane or Sydney with Emirates, Qatar Airways, Qantas or Singapore Airlines, then continue with Qantas, Jetstar or Virgin Australia; Air New Zealand routes via Auckland. Allow around 30 to 36 hours in total, and from Manchester expect to connect via London or a Gulf hub first.
Things to do in Port Vila
Most visitors use the town as a base for reefs, waterfalls and cultural days out.
- Mele Cascades: a tiered waterfall with turquoise pools for swimming, minutes from town.
- Port Vila Market: a colourful produce and handicraft market run largely by local women.
- Hideaway Island: easy snorkelling over coral and the world's only underwater post office.
- Ekasup Cultural Village: Ni-Vanuatu custom, dance, weaponry and bush medicine explained by local hosts.
- Blue Lagoon and Eton Beach: photogenic swimming holes and white sand east of the capital.
At Bauerfield International Airport (VLI)
Bauerfield lies about 6 km north of central Port Vila, roughly 10 to 15 minutes by road. Taxis are unmetered, so agree the fare before setting off; shared minibuses are cheaper and stop on request. Many hotels and resorts include an airport transfer, and a few car hire desks operate in the terminal. There is no train.
Top tips for finding cheap flights to Port Vila
- Book roughly five to seven months ahead for travel in the May to October peak.
- Fly midweek and avoid the mid-December to mid-January window, when Australia-Pacific demand surges.
- Stay flexible on your connecting hub, as routing via Nadi, Brisbane or Sydney can each win on different dates.
- Compare airline and hub combinations using the price charts on this page before you commit.
Travel essentials
British passport holders do not need a visa for stays of up to 30 days; bring a passport valid for at least six months and proof of onward travel. The currency is the Vanuatu vatu (VUV); cards are accepted in Port Vila, but carry cash for markets and outer areas. There is a malaria risk in Vanuatu, including on Efate, and dengue occurs, so see your GP or a travel clinic six to eight weeks before departure. Vanuatu is 11 hours ahead of GMT.
