Tonga is a Polynesian kingdom of around 170 islands scattered across the South Pacific, grouped into four main clusters: Tongatapu, Haʻapai, Vavaʻu and ʻEua. It is one of the last surviving Pacific monarchies and remains refreshingly low-key, with empty white-sand beaches, sheltered sailing waters and humpback whales that migrate through each winter. Reaching Tonga from the UK takes commitment: there are no direct flights and every route involves at least two stops. The live fare tools on this page are the best way to judge value on the long haul south.
The dry season runs from May to October, the Tongan winter, when the islands are cooler, less humid and better for beaches and diving. Humpback whale season falls roughly between July and October, and Tonga is one of the few countries where licensed operators let you swim alongside them. November to April is hotter, wetter and the cyclone season. UK summer holidays overlap with the peak, so flights and island lodges fill early; check the When to book chart above for the cheapest weeks.
Almost all visitors arrive at Fuaʻamotu International Airport (TBU) on Tongatapu, about a 30 to 40 minute drive south of the capital, Nukuʻalofa. Smaller domestic airports serve Vavaʻu (Lupepauʻu) and Haʻapai, reached by light aircraft or inter-island ferry. Your international connection will normally be through Nadi in Fiji, Auckland, or an Australian city such as Sydney or Brisbane.
No airline flies from the UK to Tonga directly. Two routings work best. Via Fiji: Fiji Airways from London Gatwick to Nadi, then an onward Fiji Airways flight to Tongatapu. Via New Zealand: a long-haul flight to Auckland with Qatar Airways (from London or Manchester via Doha), Emirates (via Dubai), Singapore Airlines or Qantas, then Air New Zealand on to Tongatapu or Vavaʻu. Virgin Australia also links Sydney and Brisbane with Nukuʻalofa. Expect a total journey of roughly 30 to 36 hours from London, and a little more from Manchester, Birmingham or Glasgow, where you usually connect via the Middle East or via London.
UK passport holders do not need a visa in advance. A free visitor's visa for stays of up to 31 days is issued on arrival for tourism, provided your passport is valid for at least six months and you hold a return or onward ticket. The currency is the Tongan paʻanga (TOP), and cash is handy outside Nukuʻalofa and Neiafu. For the best fares, book two to three months ahead for low season and closer to six months for the whale-watching peak, and check the When to book chart above before you commit.
Your allowance to Tonga depends on the airline and the fare you book. The table below shows typical long-haul allowances so you know roughly what to expect — always confirm the exact limits with your airline before you fly.
| Fare type | Hand baggage | Checked baggage |
|---|---|---|
| Basic / Light economy | 1 small under-seat bag | Usually none — add for a fee |
| Standard economy | 1 cabin bag + 1 personal item | Typically 1 × 23 kg |
| Premium economy | 1–2 cabin bags + personal item | Typically 2 × 23 kg |
| Business / First | 2 cabin bags + personal item | Typically 2 × 32 kg |
Indicative only. Allowances vary by airline, route and fare — always check your airline's baggage policy.
