Overview
Qabala (also written Gabala) lies in the wooded foothills of the Greater Caucasus in northern Azerbaijan, roughly three hours by road from the capital, Baku. It is the country's best-loved mountain-and-lake retreat, with cable cars, forest trails, an ancient archaeological site and a winter ski resort all within easy reach. Qabala International Airport carries the code GBB, but scheduled passenger flights are very limited, so most UK visitors travel via Baku. If you are looking for cheap flights to Qabala from the UK, it pays to understand how the routes actually work.
Best time to fly to Qabala
- Summer (June to September): warm days in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius, cool evenings, green hills and festivals. Best for hiking, Nohur Lake and Qabaland, but it is peak domestic tourism, so book early.
- Winter (December to March): snow and skiing at Tufandag, with generally lower flight demand from the UK outside the Christmas and New Year peak.
- Spring and autumn (April to May, late September to October): mild, quiet and usually the best value. Check the When to book chart above for current trends.
Airlines and routes
There are no direct flights from the UK to Qabala. Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) flies non-stop from London Heathrow to Baku in about 5 hours 45 minutes, and Wizz Air serves Baku from London Luton. One-stop options run via Istanbul with Turkish Airlines or Pegasus, which suits travellers from Manchester, Birmingham and Edinburgh. From Baku, a pre-booked road transfer of around 3 to 3.5 hours is the reliable way to reach Qabala; a seasonal AZAL turboprop to GBB sometimes operates but cannot be relied on for planning.
Things to do in Qabala
Compact and scenic, Qabala rewards a few unhurried days.
- Tufandag Mountain Resort: gondola rides to alpine viewpoints, skiing from December to March, hiking and mountain biking in summer.
- Nohur Lake: a mirror-still turquoise lake ringed by forest, with pedalos, a lakeside cafe and a zip line.
- Yeddi Gozel (Seven Beauties) Waterfall: a seven-tier cascade reached by a short, scenic climb through the hills.
- Qabaland: a hilltop amusement park with rides and a cable car, a firm favourite with families.
- Ancient Gabala: the archaeological site of the 2,000-year-old capital of Caucasian Albania, with excavated walls and a small museum.
At Qabala International Airport (GBB)
The airport sits about 20 km south-east of the town centre, with no bus or rail link, so a taxi or pre-arranged hotel transfer (15 to 20 minutes) is the way in. If you arrive instead at Baku's Heydar Aliyev International Airport (GYD), it is around 25 km from central Baku and 215 km from Qabala; allow 3 to 3.5 hours by private transfer or by intercity coach from Baku International Bus Terminal.
Top tips for finding cheap flights to Qabala
- Book the UK to Baku leg roughly two to three months ahead, and use the price charts on this page to pinpoint the cheapest departure dates.
- Fly midweek (Tuesday to Thursday) and avoid July, August and the Novruz holiday for lower fares.
- Keep your dates flexible and compare AZAL's direct Heathrow service against one-stop Wizz Air, Turkish Airlines and Pegasus fares.
- Consider a cheaper flight into Baku plus a separate ground transfer, rather than holding out for scarce GBB flights.
Travel essentials
UK passport holders need a visa. Most travellers use the ASAN e-visa online: single entry, up to 30 days, normally issued within three working days, with an express option available. Your passport should be valid for the duration of your stay. The currency is the Azerbaijani manat (AZN); pounds are not accepted, but ATMs and card payment are widespread in Baku and in larger Qabala hotels, so carry some cash for rural spots. No vaccinations are required for entry from the UK. Drink bottled water and check the latest FCDO advice before you travel, as it advises against travel close to the Armenian border, which is well away from Qabala.
